is there a huge difference between the two. looks like the 190 is smaller and lighter than the 055. are there different features to the two. i tried looking around but there really isnt any thread that has a direct comparision of the two. do one hold a heavier load than the other? does anyone have both and like one over the other. i keep reading everywhere and everyone is suggesting one or the other but there wasnt specifics on why. im not really tall, only 5'9". looks like the 055 is made for taller people but this wont work for me. will there be a reason for me to pick the 055 over the 190? tried looking at the site but there's just so much technical information that just went over my head. haha

Here you go.

1. The 055 XPROB tripod is heavier at 5 lbs. vs. 4lbs. for the 190XPROB

2. 055 Extends to 55.9" vs. 48" on the 190. This is without the center column extended. This is important, because extending the center column decreases stability to a small degree.

3. Load capacity for 055 is 15.4 lbs. vs. 11 lbs. on the 190. This is mostly important if you plan on getting into serious wildlife photography where you will be using some seriously heavy lenses.

4. 055 minimum height is 3.9" vs. 3.3" on the 190. These are pretty similar, and it basically means that you can shoot from less than 4 inches off the ground with both(impressive either way)

Summary:
Since you are only 5'9", I would suggest getting the 190. It is lighter in weight, probably holds enough weight for the lenses you will be using, and should extend to your height without having to raise the center column. If you need extra stability and plan on getting some heavy lenses, than I would go with the 055. Personally, I am going to purchase the 055XPROB, but I am 6' and am interested in wildlife photography.

I also have been debating between the 190 vs. 055 and i've decided to go with the 190 since i am only 5'8 and paired it with 488RC4 head, i have never felt so good about paying so much for tripod. we have similar gears and about the same height..what are the odds.

40Driggs: Thank you so much for the detailed comparison.

I have that exact set up and it's wonderful. I keep the ballhead on the 190 and then put that in the Bazooka tripod bag. It's light and ready to go.

Not a problem. I have gotten a lot of good advice on this forum and on the rare occasion that I have a little bit of knowledge to add myself, I enjoy doing so.

i doubt i'll need the extra length since i wont really be shooting wildfire. i kinda like the extra load hold that the 055 can carry. dont know if i ever need it tho. i guess by the time i really need it i would just get a bigger or better tripod. so are those the only differences between the two. like does the other have more spirit bottles or mini attachments? didnt see any of that in the links tho, but thanks for the description.

Back when I made this decision I ultimately went with the 055XPROB for the added stability from it just being a larger, stronger tripod.

that's what i'm comtemplating myself. for stability factors, i might end up with the 055. the weight and size isnt too big of a factor for me.

If weight is not a signifigant factor for you, I would suggest getting the 055.

I bought it just a few weeks ago and do not regret it a bit- the thing is solid as a rock and I can get up to heights I normally would not have been able to even think about with my old 40$ circuit city tripod. I don't see myself needing another tripod anytime soon- and Im a pretty big guy at 6'2".

Definitely! You just answered your own question. If weight and size doesnt matter to you then the 055XPROB is the one you should get.

I'd say the length of the subject is more important then the length of the photographer, since subject should dictate shooting height IMO...
