If you plan on doing photo journalism, I have found this to be much more functional:
www.newswear.com (external link) , the Digital Chest Vest. I used it to cover some protests at the Republican National Convention in NYC.

I have one, naturally, and wear it when I will be moblie and need variuos things. It is easier that lugging a bag around.

Drawback, going thur pockets trying to find something. I finally got a system set up where I put used film vs new rolls, now it is clean card vs full card. Clean card is on the rightside and full cards on the left. Right side of vest means this is the right card to use. A smaller lens for a quick change if I want it, sunglasses, reading glasses, pen and notebook, shaprie, business cards, water bottle, extra batteries, lens cloths, scanner and headphones if at the track, and some other stuff I am probably forgetting.

What I really hate is when you go to get something and feel around for it. You can feel it but which pocket? Inside or outside?

On shooting sports...If you see it happen then you didn't get it.

I have TWO. One is lightweight, for warm weather, and the other pile lined for colder days. Don't pay big money for a "photographer's" model. Sierra trading Post has them cheap...they're fisherman's vests, but the difference is nil. BTW, Adorama has a special vest, in "tuxedo" style, specifically for wedding gigs.
