Kanye didn't smash the camera, it was his bodyguard or whoever that was.

Personally, I'd rather bust a cat in his a$$, it would be more alarming to him

As far as any of my cameras a drop of over 1.5mm onto anything other than a large overstuffed pillow would be unacceptable.

1.5mm? Where did you come up with this? So as long as it's under 1.5mm I can drop it on anything... broken glass, puddle of paint, asphalt... but as soon as it's more than 1.5 millimeters, then all bets are off? lol

Skipped all the replies before mine.

I think there's a difference between a 1D getting dropped, and 1D getting thrown to the ground...

Kanye is a punk for doing that
a plain punk

anyways, since I never owned a mark 3, I would have no idea how well its built. Assumming its built very solidly it probably can with stand SMALL impacts like bumps and nicks. BUT when you're gunna drop a camera, that can be very tricky. (from my AP physics course) It all depends on the angle of impact, the materials of impact (floor and the strengths of the internals of the camera), and the pressure it has on the part of the camera from the impact when impact is received. If these numbers are high then you might have to buy a new mark 3, if these numbers and conditions are low then u might be lucky with a scuff or dent.

After that whole "GWB hates black people" schpeal he threw a few years ago when katrina hit, ive always thought he was a bit on the lame and ridiculous side. This further supports my theory...

And theres no way in hell that camera survived...

Put it this way, I repair SLRs at Canon and if a camera comes into the refurb section with any kind of impact damage, we immediately scrap it. If it belongs to an end user, then we have no choice but to fix it, but even if it leaves Canon in working order, it could have more problems related to the drop at anytime in the future. One "problem" is that Canon only uses lead-free solder, which is very environmentally friendly, and the law in many countries, but it is also much more brittle than solder with lead in it. An impact can crack a solder joint that may fail in the future. Changes in temperature and humidity can create intermittent problems that would be nearly impossible to diagnose and repair. Since I started working at Canon, I always keep my camera strap around my neck. You wouldn't believe some of the damage we see every day.

So if this photographer brought in his camera with visible damage all over the place, you guys would still attempt to fix it? Is there a point at which the repair bill is more than the cost of replacing the unit that you guys just tell the customer to forget it?

I couldn't exactly tell what kind of body it was, but it looked like it had a built in grip. Are you pretty sure it's a 40D?

Again, how can you tell what the thing is? I watched the video a few times and couldn't make it out. I'm going to guess the flash is toast too though, but I'd imagine it could take a fall better than a camera.
