having a hard time figuring out the 285hv

shouldn't this thing be idiot proof?

let's say i'm using 1/200 ISO 100 f/8

i set the dial to ASA 100 and f/8 is about a red. so i put it to red and everything is overexposed. what am i doing wrong?

You've got the gist of it. So you see it is kinda self explanatory, if not idiot proof. Well, nothing is truly idiot proof as an idiot finds ways to mess up anything!

Anyway, the last factor you have to take into account is distance.

Personally, with digital cameras and LCD displays, I find it easier and more consistent to use the manual setting. If the images are overexposed just dial the flash power or aperture down a notch.

Treat your friends as you do your pictures, and place them in their best light.

The flash will have an Auto Range of something 3' to 30' (just guessing)

If you are closer than 3' it will be overexposed, and if you are beyond 30', it will be underexposed.

You are doing something wrong. With ISO 100, your aperture should always be f/4.0 if you are using the RED auto setting.

If you are using ISO 100 f8 on the RED setting, it would have been underexposed, not overexposed.

the auto thryister or whatever doesn't do a good job. at least not in my room. i'll just do manual calculations.

When in doubt, I usually just go to the manual settings like 1/8 and if it's too dark I move it up a twist to 1/4, too hot..1/16, and so on. It's really fast when you know which way you twist. Eventually you can just guess by the aperture and distance. For me it's far easier than twisting a dial on the side for ten minutes scratching my head. That thing was invented before digital.
