I remove a lens from the camera, take a rear lens cap from a lens in the bag and put it on the just-removed lens, then put the lens in my hand into the bag (maybe after putting a lens cap on its front depending on the particular lens). Then I grab the lens that I took the rear cap off of and put that onto the camera. Skip Douglas

It makes it easier to get a safe hold of a lens with no risk of a loose front cap coming off in your hand and you can swap the back caps easily. It works well in backpacks too, so I've kept up the habit.
