My canon speedlite 430ex took a swim in a fresh water stream 2 days ago (while still powered up), I immediately retrieved it (and got wet myself) turned it off, removed batteries, sped home and stripped it down and dried it for 24 hours over low heat. The upshot is that all functions are working ok except that it only fires full power (ie 1/1) even set on manual at lower. The question is, is it worth paying someone to look at it or should I just cut my losses? (Bought a new 580 yesterday, but would be good to have the 430 as a slave), appreciate your opinions.

You might want to wait longer for it to totally dry out.

I dropped a Motorola V551 cellphone in a swimming pool. It didn't work at all for about a week, but 2 weeks later it fully recovered.

If you can't fix it I'm sure someone can (ie me :D) so if you give up after a few weeks list it up for sale as-is and you can make some money off of it.

Troubleshooting 101 (see also: LightRules,perryge):
1) RTFM.
2) Repeat Step 1.

Here's a tip for the future...If your battery powered item takes a swim in salt water, that's the worst case scenario. If in fresh water, not so bad.

However, you have to evaluate how much water you think hit the item, and decide your course of action. Saltwater corrosion is a problem that will worsen as it dries out. So, I would consider exchanging the saltwater with distilled water. Not "bottled water", plain old DISTILLED WATER. Distilled water is non-conductive (mineral free), so you immediately get rid of the primary issue. You of course are the decision maker during this process. I would dunk the item in a plastic bowl filled with distilled water, swish it around, (heck, it's already been wet!) shake off/out the excess water and set it on a paper towel. After an hour, turn it over/around and let the water slowly come out. Repeat that turning motion until the water stops seeping out. It might take a little longer than most of us want to wait, but you might be surprised with the results. Lake/freshwater contains minerals too, and I'd do the same wash job on an item that went skinny dipping.
