I went to another R/C Fun Fly yesterday and suddenly I noticed that almost everyone not flying had gathered in one area so I joined the crowd too. This was the first real use for the used 1Dsmkll I just bought, and I am very pleased with the images, but there is a bit of dust to find & remove from the sensor. Here's what turned out to be the show stopper for the day, and unfortunately a cranky switch kept if from being flown, but I intend to see that in the future. It has a rotor span of 2.5 meters, weighs in at a bit over 40 lbs, is 1/4 scale, and detailed everywhere. The on line album of shots of it is here

I didn't get flight photos because it wouldn't stay running, which seemed to be caused by a defective switch. I intend to see it fly and photograph the event because luckily the home club that he belongs to and their flying field are within walking distance of my home, and I hope he'll stop in to let me know when he intends to fly there. I also intend to learn more about it at that time. He was totally flocked by people yesterday and I was more interested in shooting the rest of the flying. Once I get those edited & uploaded I'll ad a new post. I must say I am totally blown away at how well the 1Dsmkll did, and barely used the 2n once I started shooting. I have some crystal clear shots of the planes that filled the frame as they flew by.

He owns another gas turbine helicopter which I photographed a few weeks ago at a helicopter fun fly. It's a bit more normal in size

That should make a great camera platform! Too bad we can't get a live view.

Had a gander at the gallery of images (nice, clean images) and I had to chuckle at #1...

You know you're dealing with something extreme when even a scale model has things on it that are tagged as "Remove Before Flight." In this case, the turbine outlet cover.

That's one helluva R/C model.

I use one of these on my bike its really meant to be used on RC stuff but works great for onboard clips it records sound as well.

Thanks for the comments re the photo quality, I think the camera was a big part of that; it produces very clean images even when they are a bit over or underexposed. As an auto mechanic & professional auto restorer, and whose father was an aircraft mechanic that thing had me totally intrigued, and I want to get more time learning all about it. The owner was a bit too busy answering all the questions for me to hijack him for a while, but I intend to learn a lot more about it, plus hopefully shoot it without all the distractions. I think it deserves to be seen, and I just hope I can do it justice. Larry.

Membership in the Academy of Model Aeronautics comes with (at least it used to...) a million dollars worth of liability insurance.

IIRC, there is also another association specifically for those who choose to fly very large models.

Yes it's true about the insurance, but it applies to any flying models, and although I haven't flown in a gazillion years it wasn't expensive when I did. Any club that offers use of a flying field insists that ANYONE using the field prove they have it or they can't fly. In the US it's bought by joining the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) or in Canada it's the MAAC, Model Aeronautics Association of Canada.

www.maac.ca (external link)
and through those web sites you can find out about competitions, fun fly's or clubs in your area. I'm pretty sure other countries have a similar organization.
