I travel with a LowePro CompuRover AW both international and domestic. Here are a few points:

1) Now that you want to travel with your gear you need to carry ALL your regular carry on stuff like ipods, medicines, books, pillows, change of clothes, toiletries etc AND your precious photogear. Everyone has their own specific requirements about what is a "must have" carry on when it comes to the non photo stuff.

2) If you are taking your photography gear on a trip then you NEED to carry EVERYTHING that you would leave it home for a day trip: laptop/photostorage device, chargers, batteries, cleaning stuff like microfiber cloth, blower (remember no solutions they are flammable). So you will need a LOT of stuff just to support one body and one lens on a long duration trip.

3) Even though the CompuRover states that it can accommodate a 17in laptop it does NOT fit my Precision M6300. (if you do this a lot then you might want to consider a 13.3/14 in laptop or one of the newer/cheaper 8.9in/10in mini laptops)

4) I put my 70-200 f/2.8 in the upper compartment in the OEM Canon Case.

and I keep repeating this one:

5) Just because your backpack can carry a lot of stuff does not mean your back can carry all this gear. Be kind to your back or your gear will see NO USE when it gets to all those pretty places in the world when you are lying in bed with a bad back.

So make sure you pack it up a day before you trip and see if you can carry it all on YOUR back.

In order to make use of the Carry on + laptop bag/purse rule I actually put my 14 in laptop in its own "laptop bag" with all other travel related stuff: ipod, change of clothes etc. and packed the CompuRover to the gills. and then I got this guy to haul it all through the airports:

Others use Pelican 1514 + backpack so either way its a two piece solution.

I wonder how long I have to hang out on POTN before I get as good as Ansel Adams ?

How many bodies, what kind of bodies? How many lenses, type of lenses? All of these are significant pieces of information when helping someone select a bag.

For detailed information on traveling with your gear check out my site for traveling photogs at www.flyingwithfish.com (external link)

I discuss bags and packing in detail, and will have a post up this evening on properly packing bodies/lenses to minimize the potential risk of damage.

I'd have a look at the Crumpler line for travel as they have the rearward opening zips - means it can't be opened when you have it on your back. Little bit of extra security for when you're travelling in unfamiliar places. The Whickey and Cox ought to be carry-on compatible and fits at least a 15" laptop; not sure about a 17" though. Might need the one size up for that.

Really depends on what you need to stick in there, though.

The killer is the 17" laptop. A 17" laptop is hard to protect in transit and damn near impossible to use on a plane.

However what immediately comes to mind is the the 'original' Lowe Pro Stealth backpack. It is now discontinued, but it can be found quite a few places by looking around. The first post I wrote for Flying With Fish back on the 4th of December 2006 was about packing a Stealth Backpack.

The beauty in the Stealth backpack is that it can carry a little or carry a lot and still maintain a low profile and be comfortable on your back. The laptop sleeve is removable,so you can use your own (and I know many people who do).

Check out what I have stuffed in mine here:

Tenba Gen-3 (external link) Laptop/Camera Backpack: This looks cool. Seems it could fit a 70-200 f/2.8L, has room for a 17" laptop, and other stuff. My favourite feature is that it's modular. You can combine the camera and other stuff compartment to make a big one. I like it..

Kata makes the 3N1 series, none of which have a laptop sleeve but would otherwise be pretty much the ultimate choice. The DR-467 is also awesome but only fits up to 15" laptops.

Best travel site for photographers. Hands down.

Fastpack F350 would have been the best. Should hold the gear plus laptop.

I have enlisted the aid of a ThinkTank Airport Acceleration for my travel needs. It fits all standard carry-on sizes for domestic and international traveling. I use Lowepro bags when I'm traveling by car because Lowepro's are bigger than ThinkTank's when it comes to carrying the same amount of gear and it is a pain in the butt to deal with those waist straps when flying. ThinkTank has the waist straps too, but they stash into the bag, and so do the shoulder straps.

I'm probably carrying more gear than you (2 1D bodies and a 300mm f2.8 + others), and ThinkTank seems to design for that kind of load. The squared top and graduated internal depth make a lot of difference for me. Those two things make ThinkTank bags "smaller" than the Lowepro equivalents.

I'm getting ready to put the Acceleration through the real test in Antarctica next month!
