261 Steam Locomotive, 14 Sept 2008

Hey gang;

Spent the day chasing our local steam locomotive on its last excursion of the year. Winter is coming and a scheduled boiler tear-down is on the horizon.

#1 Fountain City, WI

I like the third one. What if you aged it?

the last picture is amazing.

Cool shots...you could have some fun with a couple of them in LR.

They're worth the chase! like #5 best.

For the panning shots, were you chasing it in a car?

I looked at the first one for ages. That engine looks like she's got some serious power.

The "panning" shots are actually "pacing" shots. The tracks parallel the highway at several places and we try to match our car speed to the trains speed. Most of these are shot with me in the back seat, barking out orders "Speed up!" "Slow down!". Speeds are about 60 mph. It is rather difficult to get a good stable shot at 1/40-1/80 shutter speed. I shot that slow to get the motion blur on the drive wheels and cylinders.
