Cambridge would be a cool place for a get together. Been there once a couple of years back, spent half the time at iso 1600 like a idiot!

Actually I tend to get more time off during the week so if others are available that would suit me better. ;)

Excellent, so are you the next volunteer for organising? Just let me know if you want admin access to the Facebook Group. ;)

It does look a pretty nice place for photography. ;)

Me and my big mouth (well technically I guess it should be fingers as I typed it) :p;)

I guess if enough people are interested in a midweek meet then I don't mind organising it.

No sense and unfortunately not enough money.

I regstered my business back in feb as i was making money from it and started to advertise, tells all here: http://www.smallbusiness.co.uk …ecome-a-sole-trader.thtml (external link)
Save all receipts and expenses to do with anything photography/business wise and u can deduct it as an expense from you overall tax return. I've not done one as yet so i'll keep you posted when i do.
It actually seems very straight forward and i've been a registered business for almost a year now just not done much trading.
I think it will be interesting if we follow eachothers progress and help eachother out as we go along..

I basically had another probation meeting today where i was told they were extending my probation a further 3 months as i need to work on my "interaction" skills! My whole team ignores me and when i try to chat to someone i get bollocked for talking so i said i'm doing all i can to fit in but i've been singled out as the "New guy" and i've given up trying to make friends as its a loosing battle. I said the job was not what i want to do and that im a photographer at heart and i'm going to pursue that... that basically said fair enough and that was that!
I feel like a weight has been taken off my shoulders now and i can concentrate on the future.. I think i will try to get a part time job in a media related company for 3 days a week at first just to get an initial income to cover my rent etc and use the rest of the week to really concentrate on the photography business..

I admire you so much for that. Ill be hopefully joining the self employed ranks too.

Now when going self employed, how do you go about declaring tax and earnings etc?

Erm......... thanks. I think.;)

Another idea, maybe better suited for next year once the expense of xmas is out of the way, would be a longer meet. Maybe 2 or 3 days somewhere to really get the most out of a place. Thats if enough people are interested of course.

$800 closer to that 85L! Did you tell me the other night that you're going to pick one up in NZ? My memory of the night is a bit hazy

You drunk? Never.. I'll edit those shots later perhaps and facebook them ;)

Re 85L, Yeah I'll buy one in NZ next week hopefully once my money I just transferred today clears (another story, read below)

$2739, so just over £1000.

Lucky Sod,

Hey mate, whats your advise, do you recon i hold of till after xmas before exchanging my kiwi $$?

To be honest, it's completely unpredictable.

Since I've been in UK it's been between 2.4 and 2.85 at one point not so long ago (27th October I think)

Mostly it stayed strong around the 2.55-2.60 mark.

On Friday, the rate was 2.63 at Westpac NZ
Today their rate for buying T/T is 2.69

And when I went into HSBC today, they quoted 2.7141
So the money I was sending was totalling $31,212.15 once converted

I signed for that amount to be sent off

5 hours later at 4pm, HSBC called me up, advising unfortunately as it's over NZ$20,000 they need to get a deal rate with head office, who advised a poor rate of 2.6675 ($30,676) So they basically telling me they did it wrong, and I'm now sending almost $600 less (£200)

I ended up going in there pissed off, telling them just to send it as GBP as the rate with Westpac now still showing as 0.3743 (2.67 once inverted)

Finally, as I went in initially at 11am, before the cut off time, it's now missed todays dispatch, so it won't be sent till 3pm tomorrow!
By which point knowing my luck, the rate will climb to 0.39 and lose a total of $1714!!! (Half cost of a 85L)
Can you tell I'm pissed off??!

Sorry everyone, bit of a long day.

Well basically im in a disciplinary for breach of policy and one of the outcomes can be a dismissal. The fact that the managers that are in power now are not really on my side.

Good thing is I have drafted a letter to ask them to withdraw all photographs of mine that are placed around the building as I am taking my property with me when I leave. That means all recent magazines have to be given to me also. :D

Ah man that's sad.

I had another meeting with my manager today.
Basically the directors of our company coming down hard on everyone, and my own manager (2nd in charge of our big branch), has to reapply for his own job. And they've been instructed ANYONE not performing to immediately go through disciplinary action and then dismissal, as they feel there's now a mass highly qualified finance workers available out there.

New structure I saw leaked on a computer today :o
Saying next month as it's a shorter month, they still want us to work the same physical hours... And instead of working a Saturday of month - usually last Saturday for approx 4-5 hours, unless it's physically the last business day of month, as this month is....
They want us to work a half day Mid December Saturday, and a FULL 8 hours end of December Saturday also.

Plus been told all our branches must be opened 8am-830pm everyday during December to allow customers to pay anytime they wish.... With making 2-3 staff work every night.

BUT. Aren't I glad I'm leaving in 2 weeks ;)
Just awaiting my bonus from the period of July/August/September
If I resign now, I lose all that bonus (not too much, but £560 goes a long way in Australia and NZ ;))

Good luck Mitesh with your new venture and hope you can stick it to them as I will be next couple weeks

Now when going self employed, how do you go about declaring tax and earnings etc?

You need to tell HMRC that you have gone self employed; you can earn £6,035 before you need to pay tax on profits (edit: as you've already done your tax free quota for this financial year; you'd need to keep back the 20% tax anyway to declare it); in regards VAT, you need to be turning over in excess of £67,000 to trigger registration.....

but dont quote me ;)

Here's hoping you will both be earning over £67,000....and then can employ the rest of us :D

2-3 days sounds good to me! Ireland/Scotland.... France is only a quick trip on the Eurostar.

Exactly the kind of thing I had in mind. If people have enough time and money then we could even look into getting cheap flights somewhere.

I was looking at a short break in the Killarney area recently as Ryanair flights were nice and cheap.
