I regstered my business back in feb as i was making money from it and started to advertise, tells all here: http://www.smallbusiness.co.uk …ecome-a-sole-trader.thtml (external link)
Save all receipts and expenses to do with anything photography/business wise and u can deduct it as an expense from you overall tax return. I've not done one as yet so i'll keep you posted when i do.
It actually seems very straight forward and i've been a registered business for almost a year now just not done much trading.
I think it will be interesting if we follow eachothers progress and help eachother out as we go along..

I was think of doing this but at the moment i'm not making much from photography and don't really want to give 17% to the government. Anything i do make from a photog i put back in to photo gear.
Do you have to pay VAT and Nat Ins ?
Also if you were to make £1000 and you spent £1000 on the business would you still have to pay any VAT or as the income and expenduture are the same whould you not have to pay anything?

Just thought I would say I FINALLY got my monitor properly calibrated last night.

After spending another 4 hours playing around with monitor settings, calibrating, re-calibrating, adjusting ambient light, more monitor settings I no longer need to wear sunglasses when I sit down at my computer and the reds no longer burn my retinas.

I wish I could say that it was the £350 I spent on the colorMunki that saved the day, but sadly that doesn't seem to be the case. What came to my rescue was the default sRGB setting on my monitor.

Now, before you laugh too much at my stupidity (ok, go ahead and laugh a little), know that I had tried to tone the colours down by using custom RGB sliders (oh how I tried!), flipping between several other default settings that sounded like what I was trying to achieve, resetting the white point, etc. I even spent quite a bit of time in the control panel of my video card trying to sort out the problems. I tried everything, but the results were always the same. Way to bright and reds that scared my cats.

As soon as I set it to sRGB everything calmed right down. I reset everything to default, ran the calibration software (again) and everything came out great! I can now see why my Prague pano printed out so darkly, and the Scotney shots are all very dark as well so will have to reedit them, but I'm very happy it's finally sorted.

£350 poorer, but still happy. Anybody want to buy a hardly used Spyder3 Pro?? ;)

Very pleased to hear you've sorted your colour issue mate! :) :) Shame about the £350 investment, but that sounds like a product worth keeping for the future ... if you ever print your own work, I gather you can use that Colormunki to calibrate your printer too ... very swish

Cheers!

I had the same on mine, colors were washed out and it was like someone had etched the monitor and stolen the colors.

I caught harry pushing buttons the other day, so I had a fiddle and low and behold he had managed to make his own custom settings! Haha ..

A factory re-set later and now all is fine, well apart from it randomly freezes up after I had windows re-installed!

No plans for a meet yet but I think Elliott "volunteered" to be the meet organiser this time round. It'll be posted here and over on facebook when a firm decision is made.

Please, check this with someone who is qualified, but to the best of my understanding. . .

Ok, regarding VAT. You only pay (back) HMRC the VAT you have charged. So, if you're VAT registered, you have to charge VAT on all sales, and then pay that to HMRC. But, if you're charged VAT, then you can reclaim that, so if e.g. you buy a camera that costs £1,175 inc VAT, you get the £175 VAT back. You do your VAT return every 3 months, and it's a doddle to fill in.

If you draw a salary, then you need to pay NI, and at the end of the tax year, you need to fill in a tax return, and pay any tax owing (personally). Lastly, I don't know what the situation is with Sole Traders, and corporation tax - with a company, after you file returns, if you make a profit after all outgoings (including salaries etc), you need to pay tax on the profit.

With your example, if your business has incomings of £1,000 and outgoings of £1,000 you may not have to pay anything at all - but it's best to check if it's worth becoming VAT registered - since it will add 17.5% onto all of your prices for your customers.

Welcome to the Mac club

When I was viewing photos on my laptop; the would look pretty dull without any PP. View the same unedited shots on my imac at 1920x1200 and they look bloody lovely! Makes me wonder how many shots I edited when I didn't need to:confused:

Oh ok, thanks for the info Goatee. I keep meaning to buy a book on the business practices of photography hopefully directed to the UK freelancer; but can never find one. I know theres lots of info on the web but it's not the same as reading from a book is it;).

So if anyone knows of a publication like that, let us knows!
