Im sure I could make that limit myself.

Im seriously looking at a job outside of the EU now. I have enough nightclub experience both from the UK and Germany to be recognised elsewhere so im thinking as I have a friend doing it currently out in Aus to get him to pass the word around and I head out on a 6 month work sponsor. 3/4 nights a week and im sorted.

Since I have family out there, free rent. :)

Well, up and down days for everyone it seems, me included. My new TV arrived this morning and it's very nice indeed. The downer is that my external hard drive with all of my 2008 photos on it seems to not be working. The light flashes but the drive doesn't start up. I'm at a loss as to what to do :(

I used this when my remote hard drive was unplugged incorrectly from my Mac and it would then not mount afterwards. I was successful at retrieving my photos!

Good luck with the recovery Mike.
In 2005 i lost about 3000 photo's from second year of university in the US. I almost cried because they were unrecoverable.

So many memories lost and even things like documenting a dolphin necropsy (autopsy) that i got to do as part of my course that very few people are allowed to do legally.

I seriously hope you get them back.

Are you saying it will not spin up??? This product has a very good rep for disk recovery http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm (external link)

If it will not spin up I heard of folk that put them in a freezer bag and then chill them for a time ~ this is said to overcome such spin up issues for just long enough to access it and grab that data.

Other one is to break it out of the ext case and direct connect it in the PC.

HTH Maybe

:)

For all the guys I have missed with your jobs situation ~ more power to your collective elbows with what you manage to make happen. The sad thing is that this will be a dire year, some of my contacts at customers have been made redundant without any recompense because the company has gone into liquidation form one day to the next.......no last pay packet either :(

And as for Neal saying look on the bright, this is from the man who got is bonuses ~ phooey ;)

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

Yeah, I don't think it is a mounting issue, it just won't start the discs turning. The little LED flashes but that's it! I'm considering the breaking into it route!

I think I may have inadvertantly power spiked it or something because I plugged in a couple of wrong power leads in a desperate effort to remember which lead was the right one! I have so many that look the same!
I know I have the right one in now but it's just not doing anything.

Best of luck to those who have adopted enough is enough on the job front and taken the plunge.
I hope it all works out for you.

If it the likely cause is a damaged circuit board - some folk have swapped boards with a known working drive??? Having said is the HDD recognised in windows explorer? If you do manage to break it out and fit it directly onboard have look see if the BIOS recognises it? I think if the BIOS "sees" it then it may be a more mechanical issue.......freezer treatment may be the last resort!

PS What make & model number is it?

PPS I know what you mean about all those power blocks - I think I need a dymo printer :D

A lot of later HDD's with those very small half PCB's have pressure type contacts for the spindle motor and head solenoids. In the old days (Ha) they used to have ribbon cables and real solder with lead in and everything.
I have found on several occasions that thermal creep can make bad contacts there.
Try unscrewing the board and re mounting it, you don't have to break open the hermetically sealed case that way either....Maybe worth a shot.

It's a Maxtor Basics 500 gig PN: 9NZ2A4-500. It is still under warranty but that doesn't help with data recovery of course!

BTW fellow 40D users that havent seen this yet, 1.1.1 firmware is now released and can be downloaded here (external link).

Firmware update Version 1.1.1 incorporates the following fixes and improvements.

1. Fixes a malfunction that in rare occurrence causes a low battery indication to be displayed when using the EF 85mm F1.2L II USM lens. Depending on the battery check timing of the camera, the battery level displayed on the camera's LCD data panel may shows Battery will be exhausted soon or Battery must be recharged, even though the battery capacity is sufficient.
2. Fixes a malfunction that in rare occurrence causes an Err 06 Self Cleaning Sensor malfunction to appear on the camera's LCD monitor and LCD data panel, even when the Self Cleaning Sensor Unit is operating normally. This message may appear depending on the timing of when the camera is switch to the ON position.
3. Fixes a malfunction that prevents correct colors from being printed when direct printing. RAW images captured using the camera's custom Picture Styles (Emerald, etc.), which have been downloaded from Canon's Web site and registered under User Def. 2 or User Def. 3.
4. Modifies the level of subject brightness that causes the AF-assist beam to fire when using an external Speedlite.
5. Enables an external flash connected to the camera's synchro terminal to fire even when the camera's built-in flash is popped up.

Version 1.1.1 firmware is for EOS 40D cameras with firmware up to Version 1.1.0. If the camera's firmware is already Version 1.1.1, it is not necessary to update the firmware.
