So I am about to get a sigma 10-20mm. Of course I read on the forum that there are some issues here and there with the lens, what should I be looking for when I go to take some test shots?

I have this lens and I too was a little concerned about the known issues with it.
I never did any 'test' but I did take a lot of pictures at various F stops in various compositions and then inspected them closely at 1:1 on the computer.

Mine was sharp where I would expect it to be.

I think if you have a bad copy you will be able to see it quite clearly based on the examples I have seen.

Ya, I meant in taking test shots...so what F stops do you think would show the most problem, if any problems are there? Also, what do you think about testing far away objects opposed to shooting objects close up? Would the lens have issues with one and not the other? Or if there is a problem, it will show up no matter what?

Go outside, walk around and take 100-200 photos. Look at them all. Inspect for focus errors/right side softness. Problem solved/averted.

Mine focuses correctly, and is sharp in the center. The edges? Not so much. I want to say that's normal though...

The sigma I was looking at was posted on my local CL, so as CL always turns out, first come, first served...I never got a chance to check out that sigma. Maybe its a good thing, since now Tamron is coming out with the 10-24, maybe I will wait and hear the verdict on that, before I make a decision on an UWA...

Looks like your trying to find a problem with the lens already. Just use it and be happy with it.

In general, you test a lens by using it to take photos and comparing those photos to others taken with a different lens with the same or similar focal length and aperture.

You can also take photos, and visually inspect them for obvious problems such as the focus point being out of focus, one side noticeably less in focus than the other, etc.

It also seems to be imperative to take photos of white walls, even better if they are white brick walls. And be sure to test your camera by shooting the sky at f/22, but maybe that is a subject for another thread.
