Many firsts for me. First time out to a Moto GP event. First time taking panning shots. First time with the 300 (received it the day before I left for my trip. At first I used P ("professional" mode) since I had no clue what I was doing. Later on I switched over to manual and shot at speed of around 160-250 @ f/7-f/9. When the clouds rolled in I had to push the ISO up to 1250. Now my friend asks me why I bought the 300 f/2.8 IS and didn't shoot it wide open. Well for one I was using TC's and secondly I always see guys post up on here with pics shot at mostly f/5.6 and above. So my question is do you guys shoot wide open or always stop down? Also do you recommend a monopod? I feel like it may get in my way since I like to move around a lot, but after a while the 300 can get a bit heavy.

Okay, here are the pics. Let me know how bad they sux. Only way to get better is to see where I messed up. Btw, I'm hooked! Can't wait to head back out to the track again.

Thanks for looking!

Love that first Shot, Casey Stoner going hard in abysmal conditions.

You grabbed some top shots there for your first time at a MotoGP event. The racing and action is insane isn't it? I love going down to Phillip Island (Australia) for the bike races.

Currently just a P&S, but watch this space.

Good job on all the images #1 is too lite as Caseys suit is red not orange. Monopods take the strain off your arms and give you a way to change your cf cards on the fly. I generally set my camera on tv and vary my shutter speed accordingly. I hand hold lenses when I am panning. Keep up the good work.I also set my ISO from 200 to 400 in these types of conditions.

I love #5 - you can see the concentration in Stoners face trying to hold those guys off. Great job!

1 and 5 are the best of the bunch.

On 5 I would have composed to the right a bit to get the first part of "S" series... I like to see where they cam from.

Excellent images, like the Stoner shot the best, as Mike said this one does look a little lite but doesn't look orange on my screen. I find the MKIII reproduces the colours really well using "Standard Picture Style" I never need to do any colour adjustment PP.
I thought P mode stood for Program? Not sure why you decided to shoot Manual? I always shoot TV (Shutter Priority) and have no problems, also I set Auto ISO on so when the camera wants to shoot wide open the ISO increases to correct exposure. Panning shots I vary from 1/250th to 1/400th. #5 looks overexposed to me this would have been ok if you were letting the camera sort the exposure. The 300mm f/2.8 is pretty good with 1.4x and 2.0x extenders wide open IMO.

Cheers

Great shots! I love #1.

Was this the event in Indianapolis this past weekend?

Yes, it was in Indy this past weekend. Race day was a little wet but I still enjoyed it.

Those rookie cup guys really go hard. So fun to watch them race.

Sure you can see the race better on tv but being there in person is such a different experience. Phillip Island would be a dream trip for me. One day.

Thanks for the tips. You're right it is a little too light. I was too lazy to give each and everyone of these a personal touch and so I batched them.

Think I tried TV but later switched to Manual, not really sure why I did that. doh! You're right a monopod would be ideal, esp when you're waiting around for the bikes to come back around again.

He started off strong. But when it rained, Rossi just pulled on everyone.

You're right. Which focus point do you use for shots like that? I tried all the outer focus points and felt that it was more difficult than to use center focus especially for panning shots.

Thanks, I believe I'm using faithful picture style and everything is neutral. I shoot in both jpg and raw. These were raw images converted to jpg.

I agree I should of just used TV. Is it safe to say, that speed is your main concern when shooting motorsports and aperture is secondary and so we just let the camera decide? I think if I had used 1/400th I would of had more keepers. Lots of blurry pics due to user error on my fault.

Yes, P is program mode. I was just kidding about it be professional mode ;) Does the 1DMKIII have auto ISO?

With the 2x my keeper rate was very low. Out of 300 shots, there were about 20 good images. Do I need to shoot at an even higher shutter speed to get sharper pics? I had IS on mode 2 for panning, but still lots of blurry pics. Maybe a monopod would help here.

gixxer, sorry but the Image Posting rules only allow for images to be 1024px on the longest side. Please feel free to resize them and replace the [IMG] tags.

I would say using a monopod would help @ 600mm, also maybe increasing your shutter speed to obtain more keepers although practice will help when panning to get blur. For bikes coming at you as a rule I don't shoot any lower than 1/800th.

I'm not sure about the IS switch, I used to just leave it on Mode1 and had no problems but people say for moving subject MODE2 or OFF?

Sorry I meant Safety Shift > Enable (ISO Speed) which is C.Fn I -8 - 2 which is Auto ISO on Nikon Cameras. Check the MKIII manual out it will explain.
This was shot with my 300mm + 2.0x 1/250th, there are soft and sharp areas in this shot, I didn't get may keepers shooting @ 1/250th.

Thanks for all the tips. I've made a note of these and will try next time I'm out there. I've read about the safety shift before but wasn't sure when to use it. I'll crack open the manual tonight and read about it again.

Excellent shot! Thanks for sharing and explaining how you took it. I can't believe that was with the 2x. All my 2x pics were crap. I'll try pushing up the shutter speed next time.
