I was on well on my way to buy a 40 d this month. After speaking with my girlfriend earlier to day she kinda convinced me that it wouldnt be smart to get the 40 d because the 50 d is coming out early next month. She told me to wait and get the 50 d and she will pay the diffrence.

Only diffrence that i really understand between the 2 is that the 50 d is 15 mp and the 40 d is 10

She knows nothing about cameras and i know nothing about canon cameras.

???? So here i am asking you guys what i should do ??????

If she's offering to pay the difference, I'd simply wait, if you don't need the camera right away.

If price was not a factor, I'd just have the latest and the greatest... lenses, that is.

40D and 50D - neither will do you harm. The 50D is the updated version, so why not get it if you can afford it without blinking? If price really wasn't an issue... tell your girlfriend that it'd be a terrible thing to get the 50D since the successor to the 5D is soon to be released, so it seems.

Anyway... the point is that it's easy to get caught up in all this. I like to try to save some money... or at least save the difference and buy my girlfriend something nice. Another thing you could do is take the difference and put it towards an XSi for the girlfriend... then she'll get to know something about photography.

Taking photos with a fancy camera does not make me a photographer.

Wait.

Don't do anything until the 50D is on the shelves.

You are quite right about the MP count, but by most accounts, the ISO performance of the 50D is the most interesting aspect (for me anyway).

That said, until the 50D is released to the general public and everyone starts playing with it, no-one is going to be able to tell you one way or another with any certainty.

And regardless of how the 50D really performs, it will most likely push 40D prices down - so if the 50D gets panned by the reviewers and you opt for the 40, you may just save a few more bucks.

For the sake of a few weeks, what's the harm in waiting to see what happens?

You should wait to see the price difference between the 40D and 50D, If it's 300+ difference, then get the 40D and invest in some good glass.

I got a used 40D that has a shutter count of less than 1000 for 800 USD. That being said, I have saved at least 550 bucks and I don't have to wait. At the end of December when prices go down (if history repeats itself last year), I can sell the 40D maybe for 600 and by that time the price of the 50D will settle to 1100.

If you need it now, just get a used 40D. Definitely not wise to get a brand new one at the current price.

I will be more happy getting a 40D+200L2.8 than a 50D.

Not going out of the subject, if the price does not matter, just wait for the 5DMKII or IDMK4:lol: and a lot of L lenses.

I wish price didnt matter. It matters i'm just saying between the 2 camera it dosent matter They is only like 400 dollar price diffrence.

Id rather pay they extra for the 50d now then end up trying to sell the 40d in a few months to try and get the 50d

i still have no clue what lens to get at all , So many people keep telling me diffrent lenses that they think i should get . Its confusing

Then I'd start off with the 50D and a fast wide (which isn't really wide on the 50D) Grab a Sigma 30/1.4, or a canon 28/1.8 (perfect standard lenses for the 1.6 crop) Go puirchase the book..."understanding exposer" read it, practice the techniques and you will be better off than most who venture into the world of photography. Don't buy a bunch of glass until you learn how to master the 30mm.....Then you will automatically now which glass you need next.
Good luck....and, give your girlfriend a hug, that's very cool of her to support your empending addiction.:p

If price doesn't matter I would go the 50D route.

40d + gift for g/f = everyone's happy? :D

Question for you is: Are the high res LCD, 5 extra mpixel, iso6400/12800, supposedly slightly better weather seal, and the fancy print/liveview button worth the price difference?

If yes, then 50d it is. Else get the 40d.

............Digic 4, faster processing, Faster Auto Focus, Faster overall, more custom functions, more features such as highlight tone priority, lens micro adjustment, etc.

I think its clear which to get, 50D.
