Newgate prison started out as a copper mine in the early 1700's and was than converted to a prison when the mine proved to be not profitable

It is now open to the public for tours, I hope to get back this summer when it's open and try to take some shots inside.

Nice shots, Sandy. You caught the sun at a good time of day. Shows the texture of the walls quite nicely.

Thanks Jim; I really want to get back there when they open to get some shots on the inside. I see the barn you posted earlier hasn't changed any.

Was that part of the Viets Tavern property?

There are three buildings behind the tavern - this barn, an icehouse and a storage building. If you haven't been inside the prison gates in the past year you should see some improvements. The new state museum director has gotten it spruced up (mainly gotten rid of a lot of junk that was laying around. How much can you spruce up a prison. )

Espicially down inside the mine where they kept them. I remember the only way you could get in there was down a ricktey old ladder..

I like these. It looks like some of the buildings I see in the ghost towns I visit.

My name is Lonnie, but I answer to Thomas too.

Thanks Lonnie: Hopefully I can get back there when the open and get some photos inside. The earlest use of this was a copper mine, the copper that they got out here was used to make some of the first copper coins in the country.

Nice shots. I find old buildings like this incredibly interesting both from a historical and photographic point of view.

Looks like they have gone to great lengths to make sure that the snow along the edge of the road gets colored to blend in with the bricks.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

Nice shots Sandy. I've added this place to my list if/when I'm in the area. I love these old buildings, too.

Thanks Scott, there is a lot to see in the Hartford/Litchfield County areas. What's really interesting to see at the Newgate Prison, is down inside the mine where the prisoners where kept. It's not a very inviting place. prisoners of today are living in palaces compared to those conditions..
