Took these today with a DIY softbox (a plastic tub with a sheet of kitchen towel). I'm getting a Lumiquest softbox tomorrow so wanted to try how a crappy one would work and I'm pretty pleased actually. Anyway, here we go, again, any C&C is more than welcome.

Nice shots, doubt the Lumiquest will improve on this. I think 1024 pixel width is the max allowed here by the way.

Superb shots, I particularly like the second one with the lovely background colour. Lighting looks really good too so I reckon you did a good job with a home made job.

Thank you all. The home made softbox seems to be working ok, but it's ugly and smells of crayfish a little (it's a crayfish in brine tub, not pleasant). So, hopefully I'll have the Lumiquest jobbie here tomorrow and see how that works out.

You will be pleased with the Lumiquest - my only gripe with it is sometimes it gets in the way and knocks any leaves/stems that might be in the way. The other handy little one to have is the Stofen Omnibounce as they just pop over the end of the flash so they are handy to get in any tight spaces and they arent very expensive.

I know, even my DIY softbox was a bit clumsy to use when I was trying to get close to things round the bushes... but I'll manage somehow. I have a Stofen plastic thingy, is that the one you're talking about Linda? The plastic diffuser that fits over the flash?

Yes, thats the one. A lot of people knock it, but its so useful to have - if I am out for the day and not sure what Im going to photograph, I will usually take that instead of the lumiquest to save messing about with the velcro. Its also very good for indoor shots where you point the flash upwards and then it does what its supposed to be used for ie bouncing the light.

These are truly stunning, such incredible detail and uniform lighting, amazing. :)I'll really have to get myself a soft-box.

The depth of field is just right too, do you recall the aperture?

Was this the straight macro lens or did you use extension tubes?

cheers,

rob

f/11 for the first photo, f/8 for the 2nd. I didn't use any extension tubes, but I had to do a bit of cropping. The softbox really helps to spread out the light evenly, I found it very useful.
