Not much, nothing really significant.

1) a little lighter
2) magnesium head casting
3) security screw for head
4) additional leg angle to let it go lower

There may be more, but honestly, nothing that makes your 2530 any less good.

Thanks for the summary, Mike. I wasn't even thinking about upgrade to 2531, as my impressions were 'not enough benefit to warrant' and change up. Your summary confirms that impression.

Well, how about telling us what you are looking to do with this tripod. Is this going to be a travel tripod, portraiture only tripod, are you just looking for an all around, best combo tripod?

Exatly this is what i was waiting, and the answer is: Travel Tripod.

I'm for CF tripods for mainly weight and durability. I've used manfrotto before and the weight diffrences are night and day. If you're traveling, than carrying a tripod and other gear will be a difference in weight.

And thats why i posted all CF tripods above, i want a travel tripod good from Gitzo [not into another brands like Feisol or slik and so].

leg angles: 24°. 60°

They don't make the 2530 any more, it has been replaced by the 2531, which is what I ordered. I used to have a 2530 and it was terrific.

Ah i see, thats why i didn't see 2530 then.

I bought the GT2531 a couple of weeks back and really like it. I spent countless hours/days looking through the plethora of tripod posts. I mainly went with this 2 series mountaineer for a few reasons:
- light
- sturdy enough to hold my heaviest system, 40D, 70-200 2.8IS, flash
- needed a single tripod for now, can always get a light one for hiking later
- didn't like the "possible" stability loss of the four section pod
- didn't want the pods with the articulating center column since they didn't seem to fit what I think I will be using the pod for.

Since the pod costs so much I had to go cheap on the head and ended up with the Manfrotto 488CR2 head. It feels a little top heavy on the light pod. Once a few more $$ accrue I will be getting the Markins M10 which seems to be the right size for the 2 series pods.

Hope this helps.

I am worry that if i will get a 2 series tripod then i should buy M10 or maybe RRS BH-40, right now i have RRS 55 and Q3T, Q3T will be the best choice for me here for travel, but still i have Markins clamps on it with all RRS plates i have and i am very scared to try all the methods i found on the net to remove that clamp, and i am running with the time to decide if i should do that or no before November coming, so anyone here from Australia can do that for me?

I just got the GT2531--right when it was available, a couple of months or so ago. I got it from RRS. I also got the RRS BH-40 to go with it and it works and fits great. Couldn't be happier! I'd actually say it's perfect!
Also, once I got it, I stopped worrying about all the "issues" and questions and reservations I had before getting it...it all worked out well for me.
Good luck.

Rather than making us guess, it would be much more productive if you state what you want. More intelligent responses can be offered if we have better information.

Didn't you already have a (few?) Gitzo's?
What purpose do you want this one for?
