I'm really not sure if this is the right place for this, but it seems to be the forum where there'd be most experience in this matter (pros traveling around the country).

I'm going overseas to taiwan to visit family next month, and it'll be the first time i travel anywhere with a "real" camera. (gear list below in my sig).

I hope to carry the bag onto the plane with me. I will be using a crumpler 7MDH.

are there any do's and don'ts about carrying a camera onboard? batteries? CF cards? or if it's allowed at all?

i just don't want to be caught offguard, and have to rip apart my check-in luggage to try to stuff my camera equipment in there at the last minute.

I plan to stuff the mono/tripod in the check-in luggage.

^^ all things photo & travel & packing related

There isn't much to be concerned about except of course liquids (lens cleaners?) are still limited in amounts and keep your lithium batteries each in separate ziploc bags.

I never had an issue traveling with my gear (comparable to yours) in a Computrekker AW - I just have to take the laptop out at screening - international or domestic.

Any idea when this policy went into effect? I travelled through LAX in early August and didn't have any issues with 3 batteries plus about 8 AAs.

The new rule is no extra batteries. Therefore two in a grip is fine what I do is put two in chargers and they let them through. So I get four through.

I had a trip this past Christmas. Flew both ways. I picked up a carry-on sized piece of luggage that fit my canon 2400 bag, my laptop, iPod, chargers, and some other misc junk.

Virtually the same routine at both stops. Laptop needs to be out of the bag. As far as the gear, they had me pull it out so it wasn't all pushed together. On the way back, the guy looked at me as if to question how I could afford such things (I must admit that after 7 days at sea, I was looking pretty rough). He had me pull the 70-200 out, put it on the lens, and take a few shots to demonstrate that it worked.

I had two batteries in the grip, no problem there. The rest went in my checked luggage, and made it through to my destination with a nice "inspected" tag. They were kind enough to not search quickly on the return flight, and my checked bag was 'misplaced' for six days.. but it eventually made it back.

my bad, found this on the TSA site.

http://safetravel.dot.gov/whats_new_batteries.html (external link)

you are not allowed to pack extra batteries in checked baggage, but you can bring spare battery in your carry-on baggage. At least that's how i understand it, sorry for the confusion.

I have carried my Stealth Reporter 650 many many times and never had a problem. I pulled my laptop out and put everything in my bag including wallet, keys, blackberry and they never question a thing. Even with booking flights at the last minute for work, literally less than 8 hrs lead time. I got "selected" and had to do the spread eagle with no belt or shoes etc. but they never questioned the camera equipment. I did loose some lens cleaner once, thats it. Going through customs was about the same.
