I bought one from Amvona (external link) when they were $45. And it appears it is a 40x60.

For this photo I used the lightsphere (clear) which was aimed at my subject, whether that made a difference or not I don't know.

For outdoor photos, please take your diffuser off your flash.

I positioned my subject with the sun behind me. She has a shadow on her neck, any thoughts on what I did wrong? How can I prevent this from happening.
I know it is a terrible photo, the image is blown out ( I forgot to set the ev on flash to -1) Newbie to flash.

I see no flash in this image.
I'd have either provided softer light with a tranclucent screen (like Wilt said), or positioned her facing the other way, then use fill flash. Sun works as a "hair light" then.

At 1/4000 even in HSS that's not much opportunity to put flash on the subject. Keep the shutter below 1/250th if possible.

Don't agree. At HSS the flash would have been plenty powerful enough for a fill.

I also noticed ISO was at 400. Getting that down to 100 would allow 1/1000 sec at f/4, but it would still be HSS. So it's a toss up between shallow depth of field or high speed sync. It would take f/8 to get to 1/250 and I'm not sure what the sync speed is on the OP's camera. It may have to go to 1/200.

IMO f/8 would have been far too much DoF for this shot.
I agree with setting ISO 100 in this case though (Not that it would have made any difference for the end result, apart from slightly less noise (which won't be visible anyway). Flash power required would be identical.

The lighting is going to be pretty much the same today, so I am going to try this shot again with all of your suggestions. I was sure the flash fired, but checking the exif I see that it didn't. I'm going for ISO 100 and watch my shutter speed for the recommended no more than 1/200. As for the neck & dark eyes I'm going to try different positions with regards to the direction of the sun. Maybe I'll get lucky. I am also going to experiment with the lightsphere & dome on. Thanks for all of your help.

I agree that HSS is extremely usable at 1/4000 second, especially at the distance this image was made.

I also agree that f/8 would have rendered the background too sharp for the image, although I am not a great fan of extremely shallow depth of field and I would probably have gone for f/5.6 with a longer focal length. This gets to be a matter of personal taste. Had I been shooting the image myself, I'm sure I would have used flash set to HSS or a reflector with no flash.

Why would you use a lightsphere outside? Bouncing off the clouds?
