I just took the Best Buy Coupon in with my receipt and also took my sellers permit to get the tax exemption. They reversed the original charge of 2,909.24 and rang it up with a new charge of $2429.99 out the door!!!

ETA.....Coupon worked, after reading more about the tax exempt stuff I will end up paying a use tax on it that equals the same as the sales tax about.

How did you justify the tax exemption? You're going to resell the camera?

Hmmm...now I am unsure on that one. I explained what I did and she said it qualified....not sure now though.
Looks like I will need to pay a Use Tax on it....and it should be fine. (should be about the same as the sales tax from what I read, but hey at least the 10% off coupon worked out well:)

The law is very clear. As a California Resale Certificate holder you should be aware that if you do not purchase an item specifically for resale it is subject to tax. The penalties for the illegal use of tax exemption are: 1.The amount of tax due if the certificate had not been used. 2. Interest on the tax due. 3. Revocation of your Reseller Permit plus a penalty of 10 percent of the tax or $500.00, whichever is higher for each purchase and a 25 percent penalty for fraud or intent to evade the tax.

I would suggest that you read the instructions that came with your permit and take a class at the State Board of Equalization. If you don't understand all the rules regarding tax liability, an audit can come down very hard on you.

No one likes to pay taxes, until they find out how expensive an audit can be.

I dont even think you need to bring your camera in either. I'll have to try it this weekend.

yeah I just went to Best Buy and the customer service rep didn't even look at the camera. they just refunded the 10% to my Card. who knew 5D II cheaper in Best Buy than B&H

^

it's weird, because in RI when I had my business I could buy things for the business tax free that I didn't plan on selling. I was a lobsterman, and bait, gloves, traps, all that was tax free. *shrug*

Hadn't seen your edit when I posted. That will take care of it.

I think we had this discussion in another thread. My guess is that you were lucky you were never audited.

Sounds like a local store was keeping you as a customer by doing shady things... but hey, what a cool job, lobsterman!

ugh, no. It wasn't a hook up. Maybe it's something to do with commercial fishing? I was a very small fish in the ocean at that point in my life (it was a HS job, I did the entire business myself). My parents helped me with all the paperwork and they're ANAL about crap like that, so there's NO WAY it wasn't 110% legit. So it mush just be a different circumstance? It was funny though. I was 16~22 while I was doing that and the typical young kid. I'd forget to use it then when I went over my paper work each month I'd realize what I could have saved.....

but yeah, it was legit, but there must be some difference between either RI or the fact I was a "commercial fisherman"?

being a lobsterman was OK. It's a ton of backbreaking work (pulled all my traps by hand in a dinghy). Also, the pay was hit or miss because you only made money when you caught. So as a kid, a set paycheck every week was "better" than something where you could win big, or you could make nothing for an entire week. Plus the bait is just NASTY... When it would kill the maggots, that's when you'd really catch.

It is common to find exemptions for certain industries.
