I know we love canon but from a consumer standpoint a 2699 dollar product with a defect like that should not get 4 out of 5 stars...no matter how good the ISO is if you have blown highlights with black dots all over ...

If consumer reports had their "people" rate the camera they would say blah blah blah and how great it is and then state the problem and that it is a 5 star camera but is getting 2-3 stars until canon fixes the problem (if)

EDIT: Wally Dude, I'm with ya... here's a little rant for your entertainment ;)

People would see: 2-3 stars and assume the camera is crap. It's not apart from this occasional (hard to see) problem. Yeah, it shouldn't happen. But that means the 1Dmkii N should get 2 stars too, because it has the problem.

FM has the 1Dmkii N as 9.5 out of 10 (4.25 stars)
FM has the 5Dmkii as 9.9 out of 10 (4.45 stars)

I guess the black dots issue isn't considered such a great big problem.

I do agree with you. It should not have the problem at all. However, I can't see that the problem is large enough that it shouldn't get applauded for the areas it does achieve in.

JMHO YMMV

Oh and... I don't really care if it gets 0 out of 5, just means more will be available to buy. LOL

Haha  All true bw!

I can't believe though that we hadn't heard anything on the other body? That's so insane to me...maybe pixel peeping at 400% wasn't the fad back then (must have been more about the photograhy):lol:

the newest Digital Photo Professional will handle 5D Mark II RAW files. At least it should. ?

I just tried DPP once again and still nothing. hmmm...I'm assuming the software should have the newest version but perhaps not. Maybe I got the freak of the bunch...I guess what I can do is head over to the canon site and see if the version there is the same as what was installed when I got the cam. Thanks, brianch!!!

You need the newest version... by downloading the updater...

I think it was like the "terrible" AF system on the 5D classic. It wasn't until the 5D mkii came out that it "became" a problem. ;)

Thanks you guys a whole bunch !!! I thought I was doing something wrong or overlooking something in the software that was installed but wasn't. So far so good on download !!! Finally !! I've so far haven't noticed any problems yet with black dots or blown out pixels, although thought I saw some weird crap on a few shots that I posted last night on my page but closer look at them it seems to be okay ?? I'm still yet to really play with the camera. I'm more than likely off work tomorrow so will take it out again. I'm hoping the cam is okay and perhaps one of the lucky ones but the issues that are being reported seem to be widespread unfortunately. :(

I think the only real issue is the mysterious black dots. Which only show up in areas of very strong (and small areas of) contrast. Which is actually not a big deal 90% of the time (depending on what you take photos of). Before the black dots of mystery surfaced from the deep darks of pixel peeping land, all people were saying was how great the high ISO performance was and how nice the pictures were from the camera.

So don't worry, be happy. :D

When you get the camera, make sure to photo "three little birds".

I was thinking something more like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjnvSQuv-H4 (external link)

you forgot to mention that thee 5DmarkII has 9.9 out of 10 but only 9 reviews while the 1DmkIIn has 9.5 out of 10 but has 92 reviews. not that it makes a difference but i am just saying that statistically, the number of people that voted is important...
