The point of those photos is to show off the noise, not the focus of the image.

well if that is true then it still fails.

I know it is better and with a better subject in the image I am sure they will be better.

I seriously almost replied elsewhere that "I can't imagine Pekka adding a seperate Video section". I deleted it before posting thinking that would never happen. Time to stick my foot in my mouth.

:) Video will be part of digital cameras from now on. So we will have it covered.

I don't think it has to compete directly with the D700 at all. They're offering a compelling alternative for less money... they're still being competitive, it's just not offering a D700 at a D700 price like so many people here and elsewhere inexplicably desired. I really think people would whine no matter what Canon announced unless it was a 1Ds MK IV at a 5D price.

I certainly don't think the 5D2 is perfect, if there was one thing I'd change I'd like to see a different AF system (although my ideal is currently not offered by any manufacturer and I'm not asking for even 20 AF points).

I was right there with ya until the "inexplicably" part. Because it's so inexplicable that anybody would want a great all-around camera like the D700 in an EOS mount, right? And I like how expressing disappointment is automatically "whining" in the eyes of so many of those who are excited about this camera. Isn't there room for differing viewpoints without name-calling?

The 5DII will almost certainly be a great camera, especially at the price, so it's natural for some to be excited. On the other hand, some of us were hoping for something different and are thus less enthusiastic about it. No need to beat each other up over differing expectations/hopes.

Most wanted it to become a different animal, a 1D3 w/FF for 3K. Canon has never changed what the camera was made for but improved on what it always has done. For everything the 5D was at just recent price of $2200-$2400 new, now the MkII at $2700. Nice.

I just think it's a bit silly to hope Canon would replicate the D700. Canon and Nikon have avoided stepping on each other's toes in that fashion for years so there is no reason to expect them (Canon) to do it now.

I hoped for something that would show progress from Canon, and that would be competitive in some fashion. I'm not sure if this is the progress I would have liked but it doesn't look bad, time will tell if it's as good as we hope (in terms of ISO performance).

Of course you refer to the D700 as an all around camera. I think the idea of offering a high resolution sensor that can offer great ISO performance when binned to resolution near the D700, that's a more flexible imaging solution. Whether the 5D2 really delivers that remains to be seen but if it does I'd consider that a more flexible solution, even if the rest of it isn't exactly what everyone had hoped for.

Wow, hundreds of posts later, people keep rehashing the same arguments over and over. I think most people are happy with the 5DII with a few people not so much.

That may be true. Certain colors exhibit more noise than others. More sample shots are needed before coming to a conclusion, but I don't think its wise to dismiss what is available so readily as you did.

I totally agree. the 5DII is a great release. It is similar to what most people would have wanted. It was not so long ago when we were wondering why the 5D had not been update to something more like 16 or 17mp with not much more increase in iso range. I think this was a great release! If I had the cash I would buy one.

I put the test images on my site http://enspri.com …21-mp-of-sheer-greatness/ (external link), and I think they look fantastic. The quality is brilliant!

After the first couple hours, it's extremely unlikely we're going to plow any new ground in this discussion. Everyone seems to want to express their opinion, though, and they should have that right.

It is ironic that so many people are willing to bash the 5Dm2, even before Rob Galbraith has told us if it's any good or not.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

But hasn't it been part of P&S cameras for years? Why add it now? Just curious.

Thread summary:

People waiting to buy a 5D are generally happy.
People looking to upgrade their 5D are somewhat pleased but not so impressed.
People waiting for a 3D are annoyed.

I'm waiting for the Better Homes & Gardens seal of approval myself.

I'd like to know which "photographers" and how many of them "demanded" for 1080p video in the 5D2

I'm getting one the day they hit stores. Yeah, more fps would be nice, but I am super stoked for HD videos. And since I'm shooting with a 300D (1600 ISO = USELESS), this will be one hell of an upgrade.
