But hasn't it been part of P&S cameras for years? Why add it now? Just curious.

Because, with a P&S cameras, and even HD camcorders, you don't have the large sensors, and amazing optics available to a DSLR (ie, you can't get the small depth of field you can with a DSLR).

Lenses. I really like Canon lenses.

So to me, I don't care if it doesn't have this or that. It is the best CANON camera I can perceivably afford/justify. So I'm happy with it.

If you love the D700 and think you need the extras like weather sealing and more AF points, you should (seriously) consider selling your current body and lenses and buying one. :D I am happy with the 5D mkII specs and sample images (and the movie mode is a bonus for me) and the fact it has an EF mount just seals the deal.

All I need to do now is save.

Yes, that's just the thing...I love the D700, I love Canon lenses....!!! I have a feeling I'll be going with the 5D as long as I can maintain my self control for the next couple of months.

I agree with that post, Stealthy.

My only gripe is I fear in the future I will be forced to be both a photographer and videographer. I hate editing movies...

Dude, I'll do it for you. $400 USD per day should cover it. ;)

Oddly, and this is coming from someone with about 15 minutes of video experience, I find the video addition intriguing. It seems like the more I think about it, the more I can see it being useful. Weddings? - how about a quick video of the bridal dance, march up the aisle, or something of that sort? News? There's always opportunities to grab a video clip. Nature? Animals in action.

I really can't knock the video feature. It's the AF that I'm less than pleased about, even though I've been living with that very system for almost 3 years.

I think that once we overcome the "expectations - vs - reality" confrontation, we'll find that the 5D2 is a compelling upgrade to the 5D. That is, if it performs as claimed.

I find it strange that some people find this an amazing feature. It was my impression that HD video cameras already had the capability of taking still photographs. Maybe Canon ought to work on a more diverse line of lenses for it's video cameras.

Maybe I don't want a multi-tasker, but a uni-tasker! (as Alton Brown would put it)

Would I have missed out on the camera not having video? No. Might I use the video mode? Yes. Will I use it all the time? Probably not. Would excluding video mode have decreased the price? Probably. Would I have liked that? Sure. Not much I can do about it though.

They don't generally take very good stills.

If you look at the first post in this thread there's a video sample that pans.

I don't see it.

If you read my posts in a previous thread about video on the 5D replacement, you'd know I use to be a DSLR video naysayer. Now it's here and there's nothing we can do about it (and the fact it will record FULL HD. It has me totally impressed. Hopefully it will save me buying a second Video camera (for a while) because I can use it for my work (also will help me convince my wife it's a necessary purchase.

I'm a bit like you though. Though I now like the idea, I wouldn't miss it if they left it out.

I think the camera looks pretty good. If you want a video camera get one of these.......

No no...would not including video mode have necessitated a different "killer feature" from Canon's super savvy marketing department...maybe even improved, um...what is it that I'm thinking of, auto-something...auto-focus...yeah, that's it improved auto focus!

They added a bunch of "features" and they updated the electronics...but the mechanics of the camera...you know, the photography part, remains largely unchanged. How is it hard to see that this is not just a little bit disappointing?

So the ability to micro-adjust 20 of your lenses to be perfectly calibrated with your camera do not enhance the "photography" part?

How about a calibrated ISO range of 100-6400?

Hmmm... How about the in camera vignette correction?

Ok... I know... How about the gapless microlens array?

maybe the 300+ large jpeg burst using UDMA CF cards???

How about the added support for UDMA flash cards?

New HIGH resolution LCD with reflection reduction?

21 Megapixels.... I know I know... we don't need more Megapixels right? Everyone says it... I do too. But my thing has always been... give me less pixels and less noise at Higher ISO... well... how about if I can get more pixels with less noise at higher ISO's??? Heck Yeah!!! I'm ok with that. Have you seen what a clean 21 megapixel image looks like in print?

So aside from not having your entire viewfinder filled with AF points and 10 FPS? What is this camera lacking in terms of making better pictures?

Thanks for the positive post. :D

Being a bit ignorant on this. How exactly do you micro adjust the lenses (what I mean is, do you set it on a tripod and focus on something, then use liveview to adjust the focus a little?) Does this fix any potential front/back focusing issues with lenses?

AF adjustment = in the 50D, handy, but calibration works too...also, not so effective for zooms
ISO Range = important, but standard upgrade in today's dslr world
vignette correction = seriously, what a selling point.
gapless microlens = not in this camera
buffer = I shoot raw, and 13 ain't a lot
UDMA = I'm sure I'll notice that while I'm taking pictures
LCD = it's in the 50D big deal...not a critical feature.
MP = I'll be shooting in sRAW alot if I get this camera

What is the camera lacking:
Shorter lag time
More sensitive off center AF
Larger (raw) Image buffer
