PIX, I wish you were part of the R&D, or even Marketing, over at Canon.

See the thing is, I'm not sure why so many people want HD video in the cameras. It is not free, you are paying fro it somewhere. That being said, yes, I know you can just not use it, but I'd rather not pay for something that I won't use. What if the 5D MKII could have been $500 cheaper without HD video? With all those specs, sans video, at ~$2,200? Sounds like a winner to me. Or Canon could actually ask people what they want in a camera, as opposed to what marketing people think we want. I'm not against trying new things, but some things just make me wonder. Either that, or I am one of the select few who se no point in HD video in a still photo camera.

If the new 5D would have been $500 cheaper then true, you’d have a camera many more would be looking at but I don’t think that the addition of HD adds anywhere near that. There is no additional hardware so it’s a software feature and I’ll guess that it was stumbled onto by some programmer working with live view and the development of the feature cost Canon almost nothing. So if the lack of HD only removed $5 from the cost of the camera, is it still worth it?

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

is this old news? eos 1Di??
nov 4 press release? seems like pie in the s ky

CANON U.S.A. BRINGS IN NEW PROFESSIONAL LINE, 8.2-MEGAPIXEL, 22 FPS, APS-C EOS-1Di DIGITAL SLR EVOLUTION CONTINUED
Ultra-High FPS, New Eletronic Mirror, and Dual DIGIC 4 Image Processors Powers the EOS-1Di Making It The World’s Fastest Digital SLR
LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., November 4, 2008 - The new 8.2-megapixel, APS-C Canon EOS-1Di Digital SLR camera brings the advantages of APS-C sensors to professionals. At a mind blowing 22 frames per second, the EOS-1Di digital SLR can fire huge eletronic-driven bursts of 320 Large JPEGs or 100 RAW files because it employs the new Dual DIGIC 4 image processor engine, providing enough computational horsepower to do parallel processing at a rate unmatched by any other digital SLR. The all-new 8.2 megapixel, APS-C size CMOS sensor which is designed and manufactured by Canon, is the most light-sensitive and innovative sensor that Canon has developed to date. It features the same gapless mircro lens array found in the new EOS-50D digital SLR. This results in exceptional image quality and an amazing ISO range of 50 to 6400 with extensions to ISO 25 and a highly usable ISO 12800.
The Canon EOS-1Di digital SLR is scheduled to begin shipping in early December and will have an estimated selling price of $2999. This makes the new camera a stunning bargain and a “must have” for pro shooters looking to add the versatility of a APS-C sensor to their line up.
“The new EOS-1Di digital SLR is an essential tool for professional sports photographers and photojournalists because of its exceptional speed and durability and it will attract a broad range of other professional and advanced amateur photographers because of its superior image quality and high low-light performance,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, senior vice president and general manager of the Consumer Imaging Group at Canon U.S.A. Inc. “In designing the EOS-1Di digital SLR, Canon responded to the requests of its many professional customers by adding new features that cater to their demanding needs. But at the same time, we have once again raised the bar for digital SLR cameras by introducing new technologies that only Canon can offer with the legendary EOS System.”

they better do something soon - maybe it's just the pros in the blogosphere/podcast arena but sounds like a lot of shooters moving over. My dream combination i was working towards was 1ds mk III and a 5D, it's looking more like D3/D700 these days. I love their products, but they seem to be falling behind a little.

It's not just blogosphere. AFP moved about 60% of all shooters to Nikon. Then there's smaller agencies who took same path. I know for 2 biggest Finnish agencies (we work with one, and really good friend is chief photographer in other one) who both moved to Nikon. And I'm sure there's lots of other similar stories. So Canon is losing... slowly but surely.

Getty in the UK are no longer issuing photographers with the Mark III, instead they'll receive a 5D II until Canon upgrade the Mark III.

Nikon have made a real push with the D3. Until it's release I rarely saw Nikon shooters at sports, now it's probably a 70/30 split to Canon. I work for a relatively small agency (9 staff photographers in the UK) but we've had Nikon gear on loan to try and tempt us over.

Adam,

I saw a couple of different Getty guys at events in recent weeks who have been trying out D3's and have found them very good. They have made a proper effort to get a good body out that sports guys will like...combined with a "high profile" campaign aimed at sports togs with Dickie Pelham from The Sun etc. Still hasn't persuaded me, but if they offer our agency some free stock, I for one would jump at it.

PS. Who you working for? Where in Bristol are you? PM me if you fancy.

James.

I think it's in Canons best interest to do just that. However, whether they can do a ground up focus redesign and thoroughly test it in 18 months is the question.

From the new 1D series cameras, I would like/expect to see-
1D-
10 FPS
12mp
50-25,800 ISO(up to 12,000 will be useable, more a marketing ploy like the D3)
VGA screen
AF in Live View
HDMI Port
Faster/more accurate AF in servo

1Ds-
All of the above, but:
6.5FPS
26mp
FF

And for the people in the link above, there is no good reason for the 2 camera series to be merged, they are different beasts.
Nick
