I was there up in the stands watching for the first time ever without a camera

Isn't it nice to sometimes not live life through a lens? ;)

hmm, strange, I thought you were all geared up to go shoot and make a buck? i thought that was the point?

even just for a bit of practice on the lens.

very hard to make money from shooting drifting as I am sure wazza would agree to. The drifters as a whole are a tight arsed bunch when it comes to money. But a great bunch when it comes to drinking.

yes it was actually rather relaxing and the headache at the end was due to the vodka and not from looking through one eye all day

Well all their $$$ goes on tires

So the true cost to make a dollar out of photography is two dollars :)
Dont give up your day job then.

Know what your saying. This is also the reason why I am not trying to stand on any other phototog's toes who do this for a living.

If by some chance me and my gear do get taken out then thats life. I cant afford to pay for total bubble wrap protection. I cringe at the $120 a fornight we pay for morage protection.

Insurance has become such a scam. Buy a $100 printer ..."Would you like and extened warrenty with that". Life has risks, sh1t happens .....what next "insult insurance....that way if you say something un PC you are covered

Yes peoples perception of motorsport or any other "high risk" event is way over the top.......... just a way for these turkeys to charge more and fatten their own pockets.

ooh if life was so simple....

basically what you are saying is you are gambling everything on the chance to make $200 a time....

Yes Sh1t does happen - but remember its just not about you - you have responsibilities to look after - so that is a bit selfish to say.

And motorsport is high risk - hence why these guys all have safety gear and high levels of insurance cover. Two motorcyclists died at puke last year if you remember as have others around the various circuits in NZ.

If you do get taken out on the track you also might want to bear this in mind.

your mortgage will still need to be paid - the payment protection will not pay out as you were doing something considered high risk. - so that $120 a fortnight would be wasted.

acc will not pay out at all... for same reason above.

house insurance will not pay out... for above reasons.

any other life cover you may have will not pay out... again for above reasons.

So in short you will be right royally f*cked or even worse still your wife and kids will be left with the mess to clean up and still have to pay the bills.

All so you could make $200 a time to pay for a $1800 dollar lens. (whats even worse is you are covering club days which in my experience don't have the level of safety as some of the bigger national events).

Tony, I strongly recommend that you get some basic insurance, if not don't risk everything that you and the wife have worked for to get a $1800 lens.

'get off your arse and sell some landscapes - they will earn you 3 times as much (at least) and for 3 times less effort, not to mention you are bloody good at taking them'

Any ways that all i have to say on the subject - good luck with the motorsport if you continue with it and i hope that none of the above happens anyway...

peace out...

What photos

last time I said a word about this I got flamed by the boys

Chris ....... so I just walk away? After all the $200 a day (if I make it ) will cover the insurance if not more ...... so I will be running at a loss just by been there.

I just read about the phototog that got a hit at Puke last year.

Sorry motorsport is not high risk. Guys know what they are doing, they have protective gear and saftey nets. Yes accidents happen but not as often as they do on the open road.
% wise motorsport is safer than driving around town.

Just some stuff, ya know. :p

I am excited, I have paid a premium to have them displayed in a hard perspex covered 'magazine' style creative album.

no .... i invoiced out $6k this month for photography work.

of which i would say about 70 - 80 % is profit (after paying all the bills).

Next month looks like it is going to be another good month. (but i hope to have a few more bills to pay that month so profit will be nonexistent ;))

Once i have some wall space to sell prints and a studio to work from then i hope to increase my income to a sustainable level to make it my day job.....

point 1 - yes you be running at a loss - thats my point... hence why we charge more for the prints, as it costs us to be on the circuit.

point 2 - yes it high risk - hence the safety gear. (and if you are on the circuit you are inside the safety nets) and anyone who thinks it is not high risk has no place being on the track at all.

point 3 - you get hit in the street or on the open road then your insurance pays out... yes it sucks like hell that you got hit but the family do have protection.

And lastly no Tony i am not suggesting that you walk away at all.. - you can make your own decisions on what you want or can do - all i am pointing out is all the things i have picked in 2 years of shooting motorsport.

Personally i believe that you will make more money selling landscapes then selling cd's of bike riders .....

Chris I know you are trying to help. It just sucks.

If I up the costs to cover then likely to get little sales. If I dont get covered and get taken out then my family loose everything.

This is where Insurance companys win cause they play on peoples fears of the unknown and the "what if "

Oh just thinking re landscapes ........ I would need insurance for that too. Photographers have been killed trying to get "the shot"

One lady a while back fell off a cliff as she tryed to get the person in frame and didnt look behind her.

I think if you want to do this to make any money even to pay off your hobby - then you need to get a bit of business sense and do it properly. Things like Insurance will all be covered in that.
