Thoroughly enjoying your photos Moppie. Nice to see some of your stuff going up! (And please excuse my outburst at another member on one of your threads! )

Cheers, and no worries.
As it turns out, one of them was a bit soft, but not because of missed focus.

I have a fair bit more to share yet.

Dare I say it Tony, but the circuit plan looks pretty bad for togs. It might go like Taupo where you cannot get to the infield at all. I hope I am wrong - but there ain't much run off on the infield so unless refuges are built, we may not be able to go inside there at all. It would be another great shame.

Someone in NZ must realise that the future of motorsport here depends on it being promoted in the media, and for that to happen they have to provide access to the track to get good photos.
Hampton downs will live or die on how well it can be promoted.

I think a camera rig on a bike is actually the way to go..... now that'd be cool.

Seems to be popular with the sidecar crowd :D

Good.

Though I have to say that f***wit I was annoyed at (and numerous others) are becoming a major bugbear with the trend for quick dismissing quips. Seems there are far more people on the forum these days whose input is nothing but throwaway, ignorant remarks, almost always designed to make the poster look better, and the guy whose work is being commented on look stupid. Never any solid input or remarks, just an "I know better because I'm God, and you're not" quip.

It's taking the shine off the sharing photo forums to be honest.

Is it bad I can tell you the first camera is an Olympus FE210 or similar and will probably be useless as they all drink AA batteries very quickly, and the the second camera is a Nikon Coolpix S series of some description?

In other news, after double and triple checking today, the Moments gang should be advised your Auckland camera shops are shining you on. Definitely no lens price increases as of March 1st.

Cheers, Dave.

Yeah, although it depends on how you take them.

Some of these are guys are pushing for 100% perfection, but don't relalise that technically perfect does not always mean it is a great image, or that websized JPEG's not always the best medium with which to judge some things (like image sharpness, they look great on my screen, and even better in print).
And, one of them did offer a good bit of advice for dealing with the eyes.

I think most of them are trying to help, just not very articulate at doing so. Part of the wonders of dealing with people on the web, and up to us to help them become more articulate, or to understand different sytles and ways of doing things.

REFLECTOR
Hi, I have a question;
I want to buy a reflector to use mostly for outdoor portraits/weddings. Is it best to buy a 5 in 1 set of reflectors? What shape is best - oval or round, and is it best to buy the biggest I can find which so far has been about 110cm? I probably wont be using a stand for it, just dragging along a helper instead to hold it for me...
I have never used one before, but am hoping it may help get rid of annoying shadows especially for wedding photos which are always taken about 3pm in the harsh sunlight.
I also use fill in flash, but still learning how to use it properly.
Thanks in advance....
Also, do you think TradeMe is a good place to start? Cheers!

Reflectors are a godsend. I have only ever really used 5-in-1's after a period of using just white ones at uni. Personally I find the silver is often too cold for portraits, but gold, white and my one has something called 'sunfire' which is basically like gold and silver in thin stripes, they're all useful. Black is also good if you can get one with it in, can ofteh be used to add tonal impact into facial features.

Big is better, round is good. Remember though, the bigger they are, the more they act like a sail in winds and are more difficult to hold still when needed.

Mine's a Lastolite one, but many others do good copies. That Chalmers bloke these guys go on about for studio bits on Tardme is probably a good place to start.

Cheers, Dave.

Yes, 5 in 1 are great as you can use it to diffuse sunight with the cover off, and I have used all the 4 colours of my cover.

Get as big as possible, but remember the bigger it is, the more it will be blown around.

I think important to remember is that the reflector is a flat surface and will only reflect an area of light that is as big as the reflector is. Unless you have an experienced reflector user that can bend it a little to spread the light.
Anyway a 110 cm reflector will only be lighting a 110 cm area. so for a standing full body portrait, part of the person will be lit, and the rest wont.
That is why the professional photographers use reflectors like the ones from California sunbounce which have sizes of 2m and more.... but also another pricerange than us mere mortals can afford.

Anyway.. hope this helps.

Edit: You beat me Dave

I don't actually know what a decent reflector costs in relation to if you'd get a better price elsewhere, but for what it gives you, $75 is cheap in terms of impact in your images.

And yes, the stuff about BIG reflectors is quite acurate in terms of lighting. Big common mistake is using the gold reflectors to add warmth to a person's face, but having it too close, and you get the buttercup effect where the whole person looks like they've been painted yellow. Use in moderation and watch the impact the reflector has.

Cheers, Dave.

How the heck does someone courier camera gear?!

I need to send a body and lens to Canon in AKL and the max any courier company appears to be insured for is $1500. No option to buy more. None of the 3 insurance companies I've contacted can offer anything. Frustrating. Grrrr.

Don't really wanna risk sending $4000ish of gear with only $1500 cover... Especially when you see how rough couriers can often be.

Advice please? Once 0830 rolls round I'm going to call Canon themselves and see if they have any idea.
