Have you looked at actual freight companies instead of courier..? Eg Mainfreight?
Surely they carry goods over that value all the time?

A bunch of Canon bits and pieces.

erm we send stuff over that value all the time and declare its value. they cover it. thats using courier post. if you ring 0800 courier and speak to a sales rep they should be able to arrange something for you.

the other option is to check the cost of a cheap flight for the day. no luggage just hop on with camera drop off and fly back. can work out cheaper some times than the freight and insurance and has the peace of mind of you carrying the goods.

example fly this saturday - $316 return to auckland from whakatane. or go on monday - $293 return

Yeah, courier post appear happy to do it for account customers, but they just won't offer the same courtesy to personal customers. I've already had a couple of cracks at 0800 COURIER and they've been useless.
Them: "I'm sorry you can't send anything over the value of $1500 with NZ Post or Courier Post"
Me:"Any suggestions who can?"
They: "Some other freight company"
Me: "Such as?"
They: "Some other freight company".

*sigh*

Finally, have some workable options...
1. Buy $220 worth of insurance to cover the transit
2. Wait until March 9th when a friend is heading up
3. Risk it and post today.

Option 1 costs money. Option 2 cuts it a bit fine time wise - Canon say (over the phone) current turn-around is 10-15 working days. If that 15 is a genuine upper limit then fine, but it does only leave 3 days before I depart... And option 3 is, well, risky.

Actually, option 4:
4. Wait until March 9th when a friend is heading up, but pay for "priority service" and extra hour of labour at $135 for an indeterminately quicker turnaround.

Option 5. Send the lens and camera as two separate parcels. With $1500 covered by the courier company my risk is largely gone...

Not a dumb question Tony, but as a business they have access to different insurance options that personal users of courier services.

OK, I have a gripe. Why is it that those "Rocky Road" ice creams (the ones on a stick) always have half their contents stuck to the wrapper.

Trust me, it's photography related (I am lying of course). Honey Puffs never give me any grief.

The impossible has begun - another step closer - and I am very hungry for it.

You could always claim under home and contents if it gets damaged in the courier, my policy covers my items anywhere in the country...

However the might be an out clause for shipping stuff...
