Tried another pano from up the top of the hill this morning... I think I'm trying to cover too wide an area, the result is too thin to work online.

That doesn't change the scene I've got to work with...

You've got a point there. I often found the same thing, very wide, very thin panoramics to show for the effort. Unless they're massive and on a wall I don't think it works. I've been wondering if it's not just better to try and isolate a particular section from the scene. ?!

Cheers, Dave.

Yes it does. You shoot a pano in landscape mode you will get a pencil

What was the focal length?

does change the number of shots reqd though - for the above I'd guess 6 shots if in landscape & 12 if in portrait. Don't worry about image being "thin" that's just a result of having to squeese it into 1024px for this forum - remember bigger is usually better...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I intend to go to Bathurst at some point. One of the major races I want to tick off my list. Others being Sebring, Spa and Nurburgring 24hrs. 8)

And yes Tony we're talking about orientation, but which way you turn your camera up doesn't change the scene you're looking at. You've still got from point X --------> point Y to shoot. You just get more shots to make up the same framing.

Cheers, Dave.

Very valid genuine point Tony made :)
If you shoot portrait mode, you usually get about twice the height, especially when using a fairly wide lens. I like it anyway, nice detail etc.

PS. Happy Birthday Peter, a day or so back!

Not if you look at the scene and think "I need 'X' in terms of height and 'Y' in terms of width. You just adjust your lenses and number of shots to suit. FWIW, I shoot all my panoramics in portrait, the head dictates it, but surely if I were to shoot them landscape I wouldn't just go 'Oh I'm gonna lose all my sky, oh well'? I'd zoom out a bit and end up with the same amount of stuff in the picture, just arrive at it with less pixels.

actually i like the first (this) one - the truncated one loses a lot of the sense of place which panos are so great for

You saw that too eh?

Anyway, bodykits are dubious in taste at the best of time, but anyone expecting genuine craftmanship for the price quoted for fitting needs their head looking at.
