I'm not sure if it's even realistic but I'd like to keep it around $200; used is completely fine by me.

What I've got now is the 18-55 and 28-135

55-250IS is the best you're going to do...and that's still 250 or so

canon makes the best telephoto lenses. keep in mind AF accuracy and speed. 3rd party brands can't seem to match canon in that department. don't settle just on price alone - it's heart breaking to lose a shot due to misfocussing. go for a "L" rated telephoto.

For that kind of money the Sigma 70-300 APO is as good as you will get. (Do not get the slightly cheaper non-APO version)

I have one and its pretty good, it can focus fast enough to track birds in flight, so it should be able to handle deer and nested eagles just fine. Once you go past 260mm you probably need to stop down 2/3s of a step to keep the clarity.

If you want to see what it can do check out the lens sample achieve here https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=266596 probably best to start and the end and work you way back through that one

Or the flickr group for the lens here http://www.flickr.com …300mm_f4-56_dg_apo_macro/ (external link)
