One of my past bosses gave me his 580EX because he said it was "slow"

Now, I've never owned a flash before and have no clue how to simply operate it LOL
So I put it on and turn it on, but what do I have to do to get it to flash? May be a stupid question.. or it may be broke? Thanks and much appreciation

If he doesn't want 580ex because it's slow, I dunno what else he could be using. I want to work for your boss - where do you work?

Maybe it's broken? I was always under the assumption that it was basically plug and play unless you wanted to change settings.

What is it doing? Is anything powering up? Any lights? LCD screen on?

All lights are on... I can hear the "flash charging" sound. He said "I probably had a setting wrong" so it leaves me clueless.

Does the red light come on on the back of the flash?
