I use a Chinese knock-off hood on my 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens and it does a fine job at a small fraction of the price of the Canon OEM model. There are a lot of eBay merchants selling these type of hoods - often for less than ten bucks. See my images at http://rpcrowe.smugmug.com/

I have a 24mm f/1.4, but have no idea which way the hood should be turned. Do the longer "petals" go up and down when holding the camera horizontal? Have a photo with the hood properly installed? Thanks!

I don't have a lens hood and I am constantly using my hand to block sun. 5D MK II | 20D | 14 F/2.8L II | 24-70 F/2.8L | 70-200 F/2.8L IS | [FONT="Arial Black"]28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS | 580 EX II

The hood can extend longer there, since the image doesn't go as far "out of the center" on those sides ![]() Wiki Thanks for the quick response. Now I can continue to look like a photography dork for reasons other than putting on my lens hood the wrong way...
