What do you suggest for a 50 1.8 II? ES 62 hood or ES 65 III Hood?

I think it's the ES-62. (Adorama and B+H suggest that hood.)

One more thing: you should ALWAYS shoot with the lens hood on.

any specific reasons other than protection and flare reduction?

How much do hoods usually cost?

I use a Chinese knock-off hood on my 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens and it does a fine job at a small fraction of the price of the Canon OEM model. There are a lot of eBay merchants selling these type of hoods - often for less than ten bucks.

Additionally, I also replaced all of my Canon lens caps with Chinese knock-offs. The Chinese caps are center-pinch and are a lot easier to remove and replace, when using a lens hood, than the Canon caps which are side-pinch models.

You can often order these from the same eBay merchants that sell the lens hoods.

I purchased a used 300mm f/4L IS lens in mint condition, except for a cracked lens cap. I was able to purchase four Chinese center-pinch caps for that lens and for three other lenses for a lot less than the one OEM cap would have cost.

"any specific reasons other than protection and flare reduction?"

That should be enough reason, don't you think?

What does a lens hood do?

Aside from making the lens look longer and bigger ...............

[Lots more text]

......... It won’t shield your lens as effectively as the longer hood, but it’s better than nothing. Or if you can’t find the discontinued ES-65 you can always use the EW-65 instead.

Crikey, aren't you glad you didn't have to type that!

There might be more, but those are the big ones.

Another kind of dumb question, I suspect, but with the "petal" shaped hood, which way should it go?! I have a 24mm f/1.4, but have no idea which way the hood should be turned. Do the longer "petals" go up and down when holding the camera horizontal? Have a photo with the hood properly installed? Thanks!

Checking ebay also helps for cheap hoods. I don't have a lens hood and I am constantly using my hand to block sun.

I'd have to strongly recommend getting one and I'm getting one very soon.

Yep.
The hood can extend longer there, since the image doesn't go as far "out of the center" on those sides ;)

Thanks for the quick response. Now I can continue to look like a photography dork for reasons other than putting on my lens hood the wrong way...

you line up the red dot and line on the lens and turn until it clicks, then leave it like that no matter how you turn it :)
