A friend of mine has a 24" HP LCD, yesterday his 2 year old drew on it with a standard pen. Does anyone know how to get it off without damaging the screen?

First, a cloth damp (not wet) with a mild detergent and water.

Then try isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. If that doesn't do it, try ethyl (grain) alcohol, which can be obtained from drug stores and most hardware stores.

Careful! I suggest you avoid methyl (wood) alcohol. Most LCD screens can be damaged by methyl alcohol.

Test any cleaning substance on a corner of the screen, using a Q-tip. Moisten just a tiny spot, let it dry completely, wipe the area with a damp cloth, and see if any residue remains or damage exists. If not, then that particular cleaning substance is probably safe to use on the screen as a whole.

Good luck.

Lighter fluid is also very good at removing oil based inks without damaging plastics. Wash with a mild soap after of course.

Hairspray will take ink off of clothing.. but I'm not sure what it would do to the LCD...?

I'll be a smart a** now and say the best remedy is to remove all pens from the reach of a 2 year old,
and closely supervise.. If he does damage, then you hang him up by his toes for a couple of hours.. and
he won't do it again. (totally kidding of course... ;) )

anther vote on Simple Green.

My neice thought it was fun to outline her dads picture on his laptop with perma marker... however he caught it right away and cleaned it with Simple green right away and it worked fine.

That's the trouble with naphtha (lighter fluid) and acetone (nail polish remover. Whether or not they will damage the surface depends upon the kind of plastic involved.

Acetone, for instance, is used to cold weld plastic eyeglass frames. That means it will dissolve that kind of plastic.

Check with a local art supply store. They used to sell a blue cleaning fluid in Canada and it would flush everything out of my airbrush no matter how old or stuck. They had to stop selling it because it did the same thing to personal cheques.

Before you do anything, do a test spot in the corner or something.
