Hi everyone. I'm the managing editor at my pretty small college's news paper, emphasis on the small. We've never had much of a budget for photo gear, but I'm really pushing our SGA for ~$2400 to get a gripped 40D w/70-200 f/2.8 to go along with our current rebel xt + cheap lenses.

It's going to be a stretch convincing the sga to give us the funds for the camera and lens, so I really don't want to also explain why we also need a $100 bag to go along with it - I was thinking the 6MDH. (I know $100 isn't a bad price for a good bag, but I'm pretty sure I won't be convincing the sga of that fact any time soon :p)

Which brings me to the reason I'm posting over here: Can anyone recommend a significantly cheaper bag that will comfortably fit the gripped 40D + 70-200mm combo and a 430EX? I'd really like to be down in the $40-$50 range if it's possible, but the specs of most cheaper bags look like they'd be too short to fit my combo with the lens on. Can anybody point me toward a good buy?

Thanks so much for the advice.

6MDH won't even do it. Best bet is that above or for easy access the Kata T-214 which is my next bag purchase. There's a review here somewhere.

Drop the grip and put that money toward a good bag. The smaller body will open up your options considerably, too.

Hm, found it. Perfect for what you describe, plus it's a sling bag and made to keep weight of the shoulder.

Oooh, that looks really slick, and EXACTLY the right size. I could carry the 40D + 70-200, and our XT with a smaller lens. At the same time, it's not too big. Thanks very much for the suggestion. This bag is the top of my list right now.

I'm a little confused on the terminology in that thread though. Whats a sling bag vs a torso bag? I've only ever thought of camera bags in terms of backpack or shoulder bags.

Go to the used holster bag section at B+H and look for the Beseler Q-70.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll go check it out.

And just becuase it's too weird not to say anything: My name is Matthew Patrick ________ and your screen name made me do a double take!

(Sorry for the double post, I forgot to multi-quote)

I have no clue what a torso bag is. I guess something you can have on the front of you as well as the back. Not sure why someone would still want to wear a bag like that. Fanny pack for your stomach.

The grip is really an important thing for me. With all the portrait orientation sports shooting I do, it really helps with wrist fatigue. I'll find some way to swing the grip AND a good bag. I was hoping for a magical cheap option, but I think you're right - it'll be worth going for a quality bag.

Well as long as this will still function as a good shoulder sling, I'm happy. Just wanted to make sure I knew what I was looking at. Other configurations are just a bonus.

Fanny pack for your stomach.
