I saw this on FM and thought I would share here. I don't really know much about this website, but this guy is claiming the 50D to be on par with the 40D in terms of noise. If it turns out to be true, its pretty disappointing IMO.

He just compared 100% crops which is not a good comparison when the sensors have a different number of pixels.

But then I'm also scratching my head over the comments about the 40D being a 800 ISO camera.
I've used 3200 on my 30D. Not ideal, but sometimes there is no other way to get the shot. With some
work with masks and neatimage I was able to get an 8x12 print that looks nice. So, I'm not totally sold on
the 12,800 shots I'm seeing so far from the 50D but I think I can use 6400.

His major complaint is that it doesnt have video... yeah...

The samples we've examined here have shown the 50D to have a very noticeable noise improvement to the 40D, correct?

Honestly I don't know, I don't think I've seen any side by side comparisons or anything yet.

But I do confess that these pre production "reviews" get pretty trivial, it's works out to be a pretty mixed bag of opinions.

again, I think we expect miracles from a crop sensor which is not realistic. The 50D is a better high ISO performer just because it matches the 40D/D300 but with 15MP. But hopes for 1stop better performance in terms of high ISO is unrealistic, IMHO.Unless we are talking about FF sensors.

Can you imagine the High ISO performance on 5DII that only had 15MP, and please don't talk to be about pixel binning :)

Love this forum, even though I shoot with dark side. :D
