I mostly hang out in the Birds and Wildlife forums, so it's not exaggeration to say that People Photography is not my main thing ;)

Anyhow, I'd love to get some opinions on the three treatments I have of the same image below of Scotty Morris of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, taken earlier this year at the World Music Festival in Grass Valley, CA. It was an outdoor concert and well, the EXIF should be intact on these images if you want details. Like I said, this is not my normal thing.

Please be as harsh and critical as you want. I promise not to whine (too loudly :D).

Thanks,

= Ed =

Ok, my opinion is #3 is waaayyyyy too processed. I'm not a fan of the effect you created at all.

The angle of the shot is not very interesting, it's very straight-forward. Try getting a different angle rather than just straight-on, crop a little tighter on his face to get the emotion of his singing. Anyway, the composition could be a little more interesting.

Oh, and I like #1 the best.

Thanks for the input Kevin. Like I said, I need all the criticism I can get! #3 was a desperate attempt :) As for the angle of the shot, I can definitely see what you mean, and I appreciate the direction. I'll file this away for the future. FWIW, in this case I was limited in my angles as I was shooting from my seat on the grass. The place was packed and rockin'! :D

Good clear, crisp shot. The color in #1 is just not cutting it for me. I much prefer the B&W, nice conversion.

#3 - way too much IMO.

3 would actually work kinda well as a promo shot on a flyer or similar.

Both one and two work well for me. Not a fan of type of shot #3 is. Nice shot though.

Yeah, I figured that was the case with the angle. Wanted to give the suggestion anyway, though

Nice clean shot

Put a purplish border around #1 and watch it pop

2 is a nice &W conversion

3 is one of the better Dave Hillish photos I've seen. What was your processing on the last one?

Thanks Frank & Brian. Actually #3 was a trial and error playing with Topaz Adjust. I did use some layers to remove the Topaz effect from the background to a great extent as I didn't like what it did to the bg. It's the first time I've ever really used that tool since I bought a while a go. It doesn't do much for wildlife I'm afraid ;)
