I am shooting an event next year that I would like to be able to shoot the subjects and then print the photo while they wait. I have a canon 30D and I have a Dell laptop. Is there a way for me to shoot the photo, and have it show up on the computer so I can do a quick edit, crop etc and then print it right there? Any insight is appreciated. I know I can remove the CF card and put it in the reader but that is just one step that I want to skip.

One of the software items that came with your camera supports that. I couldn't care less about doing that, so the name of the specific software package eludes me at the moment.

It's commonly called shooting tethered. I do it quite a bit but with a Mac but specific PC instructions are in your manual and there are a lot of threads here if you search using "tethered". The program, is EOS utilities which comes with the camera. Capture One is a third party software with good reviews but it is purchased separately. Welcome to the forums.

The Canon EOS Utility and Zoombrowser EX, which should have come on the camera's software disk, will let you connect the camera with a computer using a USB driver. There's also the third-party DSLR Remote Pro from Breeze Systems, (external link) which allows remote connection and control of Canon digital SLR's.

I found it is important to update the Canon software to the latest release the hard way. I had updated my system software and didn't update the EOS Utilities software. When I attempted to hook up the camera to the laptop EOS Utilities was crashing. After a number of force quits to the Canon software and no small amount of cursing I went to the Canon support site and downloaded and installed the latest update. I had no more problems after that.

I'm not familiar with the 30D, I have a new 40D, but in my old Xt, there's a menu setting you must change for the USB cable for print or PC connection
