I just took all the Canon software off the computer, so as to clean things up and I was going to start focusing on just doing Raw, even though I've only done it a couple of times and it's been so long, that I forgot how I did it. I think I was using file viewer utility or the other one, anyway they are in the trash now and I emptied the trash. I loaded DPP on thinking that was all that I would need, but I couldn't get it to do anything, like open up the images, in fact I couldn't even see anything other than folders that seemed to be empty. I put the flash card back in the camera and the raw images were there, so I don't know what to do. I ended up putting DPP in the trash, thinking I might have somehow installed it wrong. Anyway, does anyone have a handle on the raw downloading deal and if so could you point me in the right direction or give me some tips. I'm using a Mac with Iphoto, that always opens when I download, so with Raw I guess I have to close it and I have PS elements 3. This is the very reason that I have shot Jpeg for so long-fear of the learning curve. Thanks.

Iphoto can not open raw images. You should be able to open them with Adobe raw converter with no problem, then convert them to DNG or PSD. Iphoto will recognize PSD, I haven't tried to see if Iphoto will recognize DNG or not.

The uncertainty between my ears is forming into better questions, me thinks. So, will DPP function on it's own, or does it need to be integrated with say Canon file browser or the other stuff that comes with the 20D? If it doesn't, then when I get the icon on my screen for the usb device, how do I get the images to come up in DPP? Do you just click on it when it's in the file browser in DPP? If it doesnt' come up, then what?

My aplogies, I misunderstood your question. I use photoshop CS and have not bothered with software that comes from Canon or other manufactures. I find that using the Adobe software I can process images from my various cameras, digital and film(film via film scanner and flat bed for my medium formats of old). I will drop an image into iphoto when I want to send it withinan email. I like having one program that will handle all of my sources.

Thanks for the response. I think I just figured out how to get images directly in to ps. Actually I didn't think that it would take a raw image without running it through something else first, but I just opened the icon for the card reader, then dragged the contents to a folder, then opened the folder in ps. I guess, like you said, I didn't need any of the other programs, which is fine with me, because I really don't care for the clutter or the wasted memory. Thanks again. Let the games begin.

iPhoto 5 does open RAW formatted images.

Whereas JPEG always compresses images, a growing number of digital cameras capture photos in RAW format to preserve maximum image quality. Professional photographers, eager to work with as much digital information as possible, have taken to RAW photos with unbridled enthusiasm. If you’d like to shot more like them, iPhoto 5 accommodates, letting you import the larger RAW images as quickly and easily as it does other images.

Another option for the Mac would be Adobe Photoshop CS.

alangford has corrected my mistake (yet another one!), iPhoto 5 does support RAW, but you must be running Panther to run iPhoto 5. I am currently running Jaguar, so I am stuck with iPhoto 2. I'm going to wait for Tiger(OS 10.4) before I upgrade again.

Jaguar,Panther, Tiger. All these big cats scare an old dog like me....
