I'm now looking to purchase a 40d. I don't need to buy it right away, so I figured I'd try and get the best deal I could... so I wanted to know if anyone thought the price might drop anymore between now and Christmas, or if I should just go ahead and buy now?

I am sure the rebates and price will fall on the release of the 50D

As they intend to run it alongside the 50D I don't expect a dramatic fall.
However as the mark gets older the price is bound to lower to reflect the competition.
I have never noticed much of a fall on the run up to Christmas... Just after is a better bet.
They might even introduce a revised version of the 40D at some stage.

Maybe they'll drop the price a little from what it is now when the 50D starts to saturate the market, along with maybe a rebate around tax time.

It already has came down some, so I wouldn't look for it to go any lower. With the other models below it there really isn't room for it to drop much more. Maybe when the 60D comes out.

Body only at B&H:
50D - $1400
40D - 970
30D - 800
1000D- 660(with 18-55 IS)
450D- 630
400D- 560
350D- 400

It'll probably drop a little lower if they pull the 30D and 350D off of the shelves.

I am surprised that the 30D and 350D are still on the shelves...

Of course it will. Look for $800 - $850 for the body, by Christmas.

The best deal occurs when the 40d is about to be pulled out off from the store shelves and it will take another 16 month or so.

And the 50D replacement will be out by then if current rate keeps up

I suspect the same price range.
But by then, the 50D will look more attractive as well.

The best is for the TS to buy the cam when he really needs it. That will be the best deal, be it 40D or 50D.
