I understand how it works, so I don't need any lectures on why or why not Canon has done this. What I am wondering is if they have. I saw a post recently somewhere about a site that offered a method of using alternative software to operate the 40D. It added video support to the camera.

I've no real interest at all in adding video to my 40D. I'm just curious if Canon has ever added menu items or any other functionality to an existing camera when they've done firmware updates.

Yes. The last release of the 1D Mark III firmware (1.2.3) had the following new features:

- Direct selection of AF points by the Multi-controller is added to C.Fn III-9.
- Alternate access to Exposure compensation is added to C.Fn IV-3.
- With the camera’s External Speedlite control menu, Flash function settings can be used to set the Wireless setting and Zoom

I'm sure Canon has learned to leave more and more code backdoors for complex firmware based feature additions and enhancements - what they did with 1D Mark III was unheard with previous models.

I dunno, 1dmkii (n) and 1dsmkii got sdhc support via firmware. When the cameras were released the sdhc format wasn't even useful since 2gb sd cards were the max and quite expensive, let alone the format not being ratified at the time.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.
