New batteries for 5D2: Will 3rd party batteries have a chip inside them as well?

I'm not that bothered about the new battery for the 5D2, and how each one has a chip in it that helps the camera ID it. However, I did wonder if it will stop 3rd party batteries appearing?

I was just wondering if this was a ploy for Canon to make more money on batteries by only allowing official batteries to have the ID chip, thereby meaning you have to by full price batteries to be able to use the whole which battery has how much charge, when you last charged it, how many shots it took, etc.

:p

Motorola has a battery with some circuit in it that the cellphone recognizes. If you plug into the USB port of a PC, it has to be running some Motorola software in order to charge the phone, or the phone says the power source is an unrecognized charger. That has not stopped 3rd party suppliers.

i doubt that 3rd party battery makers will be deterred.

It probably is some sort of effort by Canon to try and sell more of their own batteries. And some people will likely buy just Canon batteries.

Interesting to see how long it will be until a 3rd party battery with the chip comes out after the camera is released.

JVC have chipped batteries for their new video cameras, the technology is proprietary and copyright to JVC so the only way that 3rd party batteries will work is by using a small cable from the battery to the AC in port.

How about lenses? Is Canon ever bothered by the multitude of canon mount lenses produced outside?

Personally don't think it is to prevent 3rd parties. As said by Adas, doesn't stop the lens manufacturers. Worst case the battery recognition won't work with 3rd parties.

I don't see why a battery has to be so complicated?..

I sure hope we don't have to stick to Canon batteries they are sooooo overpriced imo.

Sony's InfoLithium batteries have chips inside them which allow the camera to report remaining battery capacity as a percentage of full charge, and approximately how many minutes of battery life remain. Using a third party battery instead of an InfoLithium battery does work, but you lose the ability to accurately see how much charge is left.

it sucks. if canon charged reasonable prices for their own batts there would not be a market for 3rd party ones. just like copy films and music
high prices will always attract other company's to make cheaper alternatives
i use 3rd party batts in my 350 and 30d and they work fine and still last ages
if this is a ploy by canon to sell there own well they deserve to loose sales to the likes of nikon etc

I can't see third party manufacturers being too phased by a chipped battery - especially bearing in mind that the Nikon D80 (at least) has a chipped battery and third party makers haven't had a problem with that. Also I doubt the battery supplied with any Canon cameras is actually made by Canon and that the el cheapo battery that's available most anywhere is probably exactly the same under a different badge.

My video camera has a chipped battery, and without the chip it will shut down. I waited a while, and finally a third party battery with a chip was produced. Sony wanted $57 for their chipped battery, the third party one cost $27. It is just a ploy to screw the consumer out of more money. Sony is a four letter word around here. My next video camera will be from anyone who does NOT try to screw the purchaser.

Please speak slowly and distinctly. I have a wife and a computer, I don't need any more confusion in my life.

Sony wants to charge me $500 for a plug adapter for my mic. Ok, it has some circuitry inside, but I can find elsewhere for around $100. Then it's the Memory Stick "bargain".
Thing is, you can't just quit with Sony, because their products are excellent. Same, you can't just quit with Canon for a chipped battery, which otherwise could be just an info chip after all.

someone suggested Lenmar and Ultralast batteries here:
http://luminous-landscape.com …index.php?showtopic=31066 (external link)

this is probably the best bet atm?:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk …65%3A15|39%3A1|240%3A1318 (external link)

wonder if you can charge these with canon's own charger (probably not though, because otherwise they wouldn't have to sell the charger..)

you can't charge these:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk …65%3A15|39%3A1|240%3A1318 (external link)

how much can you film with 5d2 until the battery drains?

-.-

There are 3rd party batteries available on ebay that will work with the 5DII. They will not report the percentage left or any other info. They also will not work with the Canon charger and must be charged on a 3rd party charger. The 3rd party charger will not charge the Canon OEM batteries.

I've got strong feelings about this and have discussed them in other posts. Canon have specified a proprietary product in order to intimidate consumers into using an unneccessarily high priced product. When they decide to stop supplying an own-brand proprietary battery in a few years time, there would be the risk of "no supplies". However, Canon don't make the batteries anyway, and there will always be copy versions and by then we will all realise that any manufacturer can make a battery to Canon's specification for the 5D2 and there will sensible prices based on a competitive market.
Canon should concentrate on doing what they do best and bringing camera body specifications and features into line with what consumers are asking for. Batteries are just a diversion, and the fact that they haven't been able to source adequate quantities since launch of the 5D2 proves just how bad things can be when suppliers get involved in products they can't make.

My message to Canon is "move over and stick to doing what you do best".
