I'm looking for either a 40d (what I want) or an XSi (what fits my needs) and will most likely buy used.

Is there a way to tell if the camera is a US market camera just by looking at it? I'm pretty sure I don't want a grey market camera. I've been told that Canon will tell me to pound sand if it ever needs repairs.

Are there issues to be concerned about that can easily be eyeballed when buying?

If I find something posted on here, I'm hoping that it's from a reputable seller but I might find something locally to look at.

Thanks for the help-it is greatly appreciated!

Sasquatch

It doesn't matter unless it comes with a receipt or invoice. If it does, ask the seller who they bought it from.

MIght try sending the serial number to Canon and asking. But, out of warranty I doubt it matters.

Hello You must be a cousin or sumpin. Welcome aboard

Please speak slowly and distinctly. I have a wife and a computer, I don't need any more confusion in my life.

Don't worry about it. They are both manufactured the same. The difference is in the original warranty. Canon will repair either of them if your paying.

I thought that Canon wouldn't touch a grey market camera under any circumstances...

If I buy something that is out of warranty and have a problem with it, Canon (or someone) will fix it for me? If that's the case, then I don't have to care if it's a US model or not.

Sasquatch41, nice to meet you!

I have SO MUCH READING to do on this board. Making the jump from 35mm to digital is a big one.

it depends.... Canon in New Zealand had a policy of turning down repair work for parallel imported camera bodies after a raft of stolen/re-serial number'd bodies turned up. Best you check with a Canon repair center near you to get their current policy before making any particular decisions...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:
