Hey Folks,
Ok...I finally got around to editing the shots that I got at the Great Lakes Medieval Fair last month. I had posted the one shot a while back as it's going to be one of my entries in their photo contest (so I won't repost it here) but I would like some thoughts on these other shots...which would make good entries and what could have been done better for when I go out there again next year!

All shots were taken with my 40D and Tamron 70-300mm and were poked, proded and beaten into submission in Photoshop CS3. Feel free to read the EXIF data for any other relevant info.

Sorry about the smaller image size on these...as I was posting so many to various places (including several emails), I wanted to keep the file sizes down.

(Don't ask me what's up with the pot...this lovely lady actually walked around the fair all day with that thing on her head! LOL!!! And no, it wasn't glued on either...we did see her take it off a couple of times.)

I actually have several more, a few of which I still need to work on, but I think these were the best of the bunch (or at the very least, my personal favorites).

#1 - If this is a Ren Faire photo, then the electric cord has to go

#2 background is too busy. Fire breathers can be dramatic, but this one doesn't capture it. Didn't he exhale the fire? That's your shot.

#3, #6 nice

#4 - nice shot, but the white behind her head is a distraction. You handled well the mix of sun and shade on her face. All too often in shots like this the sunny part is blown out.

#5, #7 - snapshots

#8 - interesting subject, just wish he was doing something.

Yeah. You can't do RF and amplified sound at the same time. She's disqualified. :lol:

Maybe, but if so, #5 is a very nice "snapshot" and catches her personality very nicely. Nothing wrong with that.

Anyway, of them all, I like #6 the best.

I hadn't really noticed the pickup cable on the violin in #1...I'll have to give that some further thought. I guess being a musician myself it's just not something I pay attention to to begin with, but also all of the stage performers were mic'd/cabled...with the stages they had and the relative size of the crowds, I doubt anyone would have heard them otherwise! LOL!!!

In this shot here, they did try to camouflage the mic stand with some leafy garland, but clearly the mics are still there. I suppose I could clone those out if push came to shove but for the Ren Fair's photo contest, I really don't think it's that big of an issue...that's just how the folks were playing.

The issues with shot #2 had crossed my mind. The peformer's name is Johnny Phoenix. I'm not sure if he actually does the "breathing fire" thing or not...at least I didn't see him doing it. He ate fire, walked on fire, set a Barbi on fire (and you should have heard the "Flaming Ken" jokes! LOL!!!) but actual fire breathing wasn't part of either of the two shows we saw that day. Hopefully this next shot of "Uncle Johnny" is a little more interesting...

They did have another group that was doing the fire breathing but honestly...their act was so positively lame that we didn't hang around for it.

I will also go back and do some touch up work on #4. The white spot was a result of doing some "on the fly cloning"...I was trying to get some of these ready to take to the printers and in this shot, the lady had "a guy growing out of her shoulder". I guess I got a little sloppy.

I can see where #7 would be considered a "snap shot"...not really sure there's anything else I could have done there though to make it look otherwise. I am surprised to hear that about #5 though...? What could I/should I have done differently here?

#8 was another comedian/stage performer and was another one who I really just didn't think was all that funny so I didn't hang around too long. If anything to me, this was really the "snap shot" of the bunch, but I thought it turned out fairly well.

(This one was a tich blurry...the guy was moving around -a lot- and it was rather over cast that particular part of the afternoon. I've sharpened as much as I dare and the print didn't come out as bad as you see here.)

Like I said, that first batch were the shots that I thought were the best and certainly my personal favorites, but I'd like to hear some thoughts/comments on these others too.
