I just got my first dslr (xsi). Please let me know how I can improve this picture. Thanks!

Well, from a technical stand point the shot isn't too bad. It could be centered a little better and you probably should have used a polarizer of some kind to get some deeper blues in that sky, but the image is well focused, the colors look pretty accurate and I'm not seeing much sign of lens distortion or anything.

My big problem with this image is simply...well...it's rather cliche. Not to sound rude and goodness knows I've done shots like this myself, but that's the problem...I think most folks have that shot "looking up at the big building". I'm not trying to be rude here, but there's nothing really special about this shot (at least IMHO). Even if you had of had it perfectly centered and had of used top of the line gear and filters and such, this would just be a bland shot because it's been done to death. I know if I dug into my archives, I could probably find a dozen or so shots like that that I've taken in downtown Cleveland and I'm sure most folks who live around big cities can probably say the same thing. It's kind of like all the shots you see of suspension bridges and such...it's really hard to find a new and interesting angle that will capture folks attention. That whole "examination of lines" idea and so forth really only goes so far.

Anyways, again not trying to be rude...just my $.02 worth! Either way I hope you enjoy your new XSI...it's a great camera and should serve you well!

Peace,
Jim

You could perspective correct it so that the lines don't converge so much and like was mentioned a polarizer would have made the sky and clouds have much better contrast.

maybe a little less sky, and a portrait orientation would help? but yeah, a polarizing filter would help to bring some deeper tones to the sky. welcome to the money pit. :)
