I know you Southerners get these guys all the time and are probably bored silly with all the hummers darting about, but up in Northern Illinois and in the fall these guys are rare. I saw one this weekend so we quickly put out the feeder and now we got 2 pairs hanging around fueling up before their migration. They must be grateful as this little guy let me snap off a few before flying off.

Very nice......
The hummers we had all summer have headed south. Last saw them just this past Friday.

Excellent shots John, he must have let you get pretty close. And keep the feeders up and fresh, right up till things freeze. I read about doing that and did it last year and got many, many migrating hummers stop of for a tankup right up till freezing, even after the first showfalls.

Thanx for the comments. Yes, he let me get within 6 feet. I had to go slow and he was watching me the whole time but he didn't seem bothered by the camera or the flash.

We've had another pair show up today so I think I'm going to put out another feeder. The one feeder seems to be causing a ruckus as the original pair are keeping everyone else away.

They are very territorial and will fight over feeders. It's best to put the new one out of sight of the first, or the boss bird will hog them both.

Separate them by a bush or the corner of a building. I have read that just getting them out of sight from each other will do wonders. :)

I've been able to be within grabbing distance of 'our' hummers (1' or less). Great shots, BTW!
