Can anyone recommend a brand of rechargeable battery pack for say a Canon 580 EX II? I can't find one made by Canon.. there is the CP E4 but that's just to hold 8 AA batteries... any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The CP-E4 (external link) works great! I can't get close to running it out at a wedding, using it all day, often as the main light to fight the sun. I have two, one for my pocket, one to strap onto a speedlite that I have on a light stand, and i'll get another flash/battery pack soon too.

Get some Powerex batteries and a Maha charger from www.thomasdistributing.com (external link) , they're a good investment.

Look at the additional battery options for the 580ex II and they list two Quantum rechargeable battery pack options for the canon flash.

The Quantum can power just about anything, and will run all day. It's heavy though, and expensive. The CP-E4 only powers the flash, but it's light and does a great job, and also runs all day in my experience.

On the topic of relative expense...I have had a Quantum Turbo for about 15 years, on the original battery. During that same period, it would have been necessary to buy 5 sets of 8 AA NiMH batteries, as they are good for only about 3 years. Compare the relative cost, after considering battery lifetime.

You could be right. According to Battery University (external link) you get 200-300 cycles from a battery if you deep cycle it every time, more if you're nicer to it. Let's assume 200 cycles, to be safe. For me that's 6 years of weddings, and those six years of weddings earn me six figures. Let's take what I expect is an average profit from weddings in the US of $2000 for a decent photographer, 200 weddings, that's profit of $400K. The batteries cost me $25. So while you have a good point I don't think $25 out of $400,000 is really too significant :p

I think other factors are more important: versatility (quantum wins), weight (canon wins), power available (quantum wins but canon is fit for purpose), and durability. The battery trays in the CP-E3 tended to have tabs break, but they still worked, and replacements are cheap enough. The CP-E4 seems more robust.

My point about relative expense was merely due to the fact that those considering Quantums have no idea that the battery lasts a very long lifetime, so it is the cost of one battery vs. the cost of many batteries. So once factored into the initial purchase price, the Quantum isn't as pricey as it might seem to be, compared to the Canon. Amortized over 15 years, a Quantum Turbo's initial $400 price is a low $2.22 per month (which does not take into consideration the replacement cost of a battery, allowing the electronics to be used another15 years). It was not a comparison of one product vs. the other, per se.

Compact Battery Pack CP-E4 for me too... though not sure what people use to fix it to the flash or any other method than a cord into my trouser pocket!

Now that's some good information. I'd not thought beyond that huge price tag and was possibly willing to go with it because of the number of flashes per charge....

Thanks.
