dealing with alternating shadows?

the location: gazebo, not fully covered. Just 2x2's overhead basically, so it casts alternating shadows on the subject.

what would be the approach to eliminating those shadows? I didn't try too much, was just scouting out a location. I was trying to use off camera flash to fill, but wasn't haven't much success.

any suggestions?
