Does anyone (or can you even) use both a neck strap and a hand strap? If so how (would you or do you) set the neck strap away and use the hand strap? I dont want to go to a clip off neck strap so I am talking about a neck strap like the one that came with my 40D.

I find times I love having the neck strap and then some more intense action situations where I would like the hand strap and dont want the neck strap flying all over the place.

Both a Hand strap... and neck strap

I always use two bodies usually having the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens on my 40D hanging from my neck on an OPTECH Reporter strap and a 70-200mm f/4L IS lens on my 30D in a holster case at my left hip using a hand strap.

I mean on the same body, I only have one camera... (I dream of more than one though, but alas I am a poor college student)

You can buy a small metal piece that will allow you to use both.

I have a hand strap on my 10D with the base plate. It also came with a little metal piece where you could have both the neck strap and hand strap.

Some pictures of the metal piece here.

Yes it can be done, I do it on my ungripped 5D, you just have to have some where on the bottom of the body to attach the strap. Either an L plate, a hand strap plate, or a battery grip.

I have both on my 1dm2n. Overall, I like the setup, but there are times I wish one or the other would "disappear". The hand strap does negate the use of the portrait grip controls - but as this is my forst camera with those controls, it doesn't really matter.

I've got the hand strap on all my camera bodies. I've tried shoulder straps and have never been happy with any of them. Well that changed last Friday night. I shot my first football game using the R-strap ( http://www.blackrapid.com/ (external link) ) on my second body. What a huge difference it makes. I no longer have to keep pulling the strap up on my should. The camera is easy to access when needed and quietly out of the way when I don't need it.

I just wonder why it took so long for someone to come up with this idea!

If you're using the grip to attach the hand strap, here's an old thread with instructions for attaching same....

I have both on my 40D. I love the hand strap and hate the neck strap. I just keep the neck strap for when I need my hands to be free.

I use Camdapter for my 20D w/o grip. I love it, I only put the neck strap on my shoulder when I am not shooting, most of the time I use the hand strap.
