Do you recommend 430ex flash for 30D?

I own an EOS 30D body with 17-85mm lens. I would like to get an external flash. I am on a bit tight budget, and I am considering a 430ex Flash (used) for $ 185.
A friend of mine advised me NOT to buy 430ex, because it has a slow rcycle time. He recommended 580ex II. Is the difference in this area that big?
Should I buy the 430ex now, or should I wait for a year or so to get the 580ex II?

The difference is not overly great I think between the recycle time of the 430EX and 580EX II for average everyday use, but that really comes down to what you are shooting with your flash. I own both and if it were me and I were only going to have one flash, I would want the capabilities and advantages of the 580EX II any day. However if that cost is going to hold you back the 430EX is far from bad and MUCH better than nothing (the on board flash is considered nothing).

I agree with this 110%. Like most of us here, it's 580EX II hands down. I purchased a used 430EX myself but would prefer 580EX. But, I bought the best flash my money can afford for now....
