since the 5dmkII now has video. do u think there's a setting in the camera to have the mounted flash stay constantly on to use it in video mode? or will there be another flash mounted to do that? i just saw the 5dmkII video and it looks amazing and the part with the guy in the helicopter got me wondering if there was a flash mounted on the 5dmkII that was constantly on.

No way a mounted flash would work in video mode. External lights enabled them to get lighting in that video, although I don't know the specifics of the helicopter shots.

You would burn up a flash doing that.

For video you really want off camera light sources.

A lot of small video lights will fit on a hot shoe. They are usually powered by a large seperate battery though.

i would not be surprised if some high powered white LED lights are/become available which would be able to run off of a much smaller power source.

They're called strobes for a reason. I think you would blind the entire city of Chicago if you fired a 580EXII for more than a couple of seconds

It's called a light bulb and constant source of electricity. Try it out sometime. You might have a switch in your room that controls these mysterious accessories to film.

Exactly. You would burn out your flash if used as an always ON light source, if it's even possible.

You have to remember to take that 5D II helicopter promo video with a grain of salt, I think most of us will find it hard to get results half as good. This guy has more talent then most, access to the best Canon lenses, gyro stabilization mount, proffesional make-up artists and lighting. I'm sure he could have made the video from my 3MP phone look great :).

It's too easy to get swept away by all these promo's and forget that for the most part what has the greatest impact on the quality of those productions is the proffesionals behind and around the equipment more so then the 5D II. I'm not saying the new 5D won't give good HD feeds but it's a photographic camera 1st and until we see the results from mere mortals I wouldn't start spending on video accessories :).

Sometimes my 580ex will, I don't know how to discribe it, "pulse" when I'm mounting it on the camera. It'll just stay on for about a second. When it does that it's not a constant beam of light. It makes a buzzing sound and just flashes really fast.

It's only done it two or three times in the almost 4 years I've had it.

I'm sure you can't do that and I'm pretty sure you don't want to.

This is caused when you press the DoF preview button(next to the lens mount). It's used to help you check the DoF with your lens stopped down.

It's called Modeling Flash and it says not to use it more then 10 consecutive times without letting the flash rest at least 10mins or you risk damaging the flash head due to heat.

The 40D allows you to "disable" the DOF button from turning on the modeling light. I accidentally fired the modeling light ONCE (right in my face) before disbabling it
